You buy in bulk at BJ's because you trust the membership has your back if something goes wrong. And BJ's mostly earns that trust: general merchandise gets a 365-day return window, which beats a lot of retailers by a mile.
But that generous policy has real limits, and some of them catch new members off guard at the service desk. Before your next big trip, it pays to pick up some great warehouse club hacks along with the fine print that could cost you a refund.
Here are 14 items BJ's won't take back, even with your membership card in hand.
Editor's note: Policies may change and can vary by location.
Alcohol
Grabbed a bottle of wine for a dinner party that got canceled? BJ's is blunt about it: "No, all alcohol sales are final and cannot be returned." That covers beer, wine, and liquor bought in-club or online, with no exceptions for receipts or membership lookups.
This one trips people up because plenty of other grocery items at BJ's can go back. Treat alcohol as final the moment you check out, and only buy what you are sure you will drink or give away.
Fireworks and Items with Gas, Oil, or Fuel Added
Stocking up for a Fourth of July cookout? Fireworks and anything with gas, oil, or fuel already added land on BJ's final sale list. Gas-powered outdoor equipment and generators sit under a separate rule for products with manufacturer service-center-only restrictions.
That means a generator with a problem goes back to the manufacturer, not the club. Before you buy fueled equipment, read the warranty terms so you know who to call when something breaks.
Gift Cards
Bought a gift card and realized you picked the wrong amount? Too bad. BJ's groups gift cards with lottery tickets, cigarettes, and alcohol under its final sale category, so they cannot be returned or cashed out once you pay.
If you are unsure how much to load, start smaller or just ask the recipient. There is no walking it back once the transaction goes through.
Trading Cards
Picked up a pack of collectible sports cards for a grandkid who already has it? BJ's bans returns on trading cards of any kind, "whether opened or unopened." Even a sealed, untouched pack will not get refunded.
That is stricter than most categories, where an unopened item usually has a path back. With trading cards, ask before you buy, because there is no undo button here.
Lottery Tickets, Cigarettes, and Tobacco Products
These age-restricted items sit in the same final sale bucket as alcohol. Once you pay, lottery tickets, cigarettes, and tobacco products cannot be returned, full stop.
That lines up with most retailers, since regulated products like these cannot be put back on the shelf and resold. Buy only what you need, because the service desk will turn you away.
Opened DVDs, Computer Software, and Video Games
Bought a video game that turned out to be a dud? If the shrink wrap is broken, it is final sale. BJ's lists "opened DVDs, computer software and video games" as non-returnable, even inside the 90-day electronics window.
Keep these sealed until you are certain, especially gifts. Once that plastic comes off, you own it, no matter how fresh the receipt is.
Opened Massage Chairs
Thought you would love that big-ticket massage chair, then changed your mind after a few sessions? BJ's names "massage chairs that are opened" as final sale merchandise, so once it is out of the box, it is yours to keep.
Try out a floor model in the club before you commit to one at home. At massage chair prices, a few minutes in the showroom beats a four-figure mistake in your living room.
Items Purchased from Outside Resellers
Found a BJ's-brand item on a resale site or secondhand marketplace? BJ's excludes "items purchased from resellers" that were not bought directly in-club, on BJs.com, or through the BJ's app.
That closes a loophole some shoppers try to use. If you did not buy it from BJ's yourself, do not expect the club to take it back, no matter how new it looks.
Items Purchased as Part of a Special Event
Scored a deal during a special promotional event? Those purchases often fall outside the normal return framework. BJ's lists "items purchased as part of a special event" as final sale, right alongside bulk and reseller purchases.
Read the signage or online disclaimers closely during these sales. If something is tied to a one-time event, assume it is final before you swipe your card.
Get a protection plan on all your appliances
Did you know if your air conditioner stops working, your homeowner’s insurance won’t cover it? Same with plumbing, electrical issues, appliances, and more.
Whether or not you’re a new homeowner, a home warranty from Choice Home Warranty could pick up the slack where insurance falls short and protect you against surprise expenses. If a covered system in your home breaks, you can call their hotline 24/7 to get it repaired.
For a limited time, you can get your first month free with a Single Payment home warranty plan.
Items Without Proof of Purchase
Lost the receipt? BJ's can often look up your purchase with your membership card instead. But with no proof of purchase at all and no membership to check, the item becomes non-returnable.
Non-member returns without a receipt get denied outright. Keep your membership card handy on every return trip, since it is usually your best substitute for a paper receipt.
Items Marked Final Sale or Ineligible for Return
Clearance rack looking tempting? Check the tag first. BJ's excludes "items marked as ineligible for return or exchange" and "items marked as final sale," whether in-club, on BJs.com, or in the app, no matter how recently you bought them.
This is the catch-all you will see most often on clearance stickers and online-only listings. Glance at the fine print on the tag or product page before you buy something you might want to bring back.
Large Bulk Online Purchases
Ordering ten or more of the same item online in one transaction that tops $1,000? That order becomes final sale. The rule is aimed at resellers who treat BJ's as a bulk-buy-and-return pipeline.
Everyday shoppers rarely hit that threshold, but if you are buying in volume for a big event or a small business, check the cart total before you place the order.
Products with Manufacturer Service-Center-Only Restrictions
Bought a shed, trampoline, boat, or spa and it turned out defective? Items under a manufacturer's warranty with service-center-only restrictions cannot go back to BJ's at all. The list covers awnings, boats, gas-powered outdoor equipment, generators, furniture sets bought over a year ago, pools, screenhouses, sheds, spas, saunas, and swing sets.
Mattresses land here too, with a twist. A mattress normally falls in BJ's 30-day home category, which is a short window rather than a ban. Once it is out of the plastic covering or opened, though, it moves to the manufacturer-only list and cannot go back to the club.
Prescription Eyewear and Contact Lenses
Ordered new glasses through BJ's Optical and the prescription feels off? BJ's Optical does not accept returns on prescription eyewear or contact lenses, period. One narrow exception: an unopened, unmarked contact lens box that is at least a year from its expiration date may be eligible.
Broken frames get different treatment. Bring damaged prescription glasses back within 12 months and you can get 50% off a one-time replacement, and a prescription change within 60 days of purchase means free remade lenses.
Bottom line
BJ's really does run one of the more generous return windows among warehouse clubs, with 365 days on general merchandise, 90 days on electronics and groceries, and 30 days on home items like mattresses and patio sets. The exceptions above are narrow, but they rarely bend.
Keep your receipts, scan for final sale tags before you buy, and check the return terms on BJs.com ahead of any big-ticket purchase. That little bit of homework pairs well with the best cash back credit cards to stretch every cart.
