A four-year degree and a résumé full of relevant experience aren't the only way past $45,000 a year. A wide range of jobs, backed by current U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, can clear that mark without requiring a four-year degree. Some require an associate degree or certificate, while others offer on-the-job training. Hitting $45K in some of these roles depends on location, shift differentials, or overtime, so the figures below are a realistic target, not a day-one guarantee.
Getting there could genuinely earn extra money without the usual credentials. Here is what each role involves, what it pays, and how someone gets in.

Physical therapist assistant
Median annual salary: $68,380
Physical therapist assistants guide patients through exercises a physical therapist prescribes, helping people rebuild strength after surgery, injury, or illness.
An associate's degree from an accredited program is typically required, followed by state licensure or certification requirements. BLS lists no prior work experience as necessary to enter the occupation.
Surgical technologist
Median annual salary: $64,650
Surgical technologists prepare operating rooms, sterilize instruments, and hand tools to surgeons mid-procedure, work at the center of every operation.
A postsecondary certificate or associate's degree in surgical technology is the typical entry path. Employers may require or prefer certification, and some states regulate surgical technologists. BLS lists no prior work experience as necessary.
Solar photovoltaic installer
Median annual salary: $53,140
Solar photovoltaic installers assemble, mount, and wire the panel systems that convert sunlight into electricity.
A high school diploma covers the entry requirement, and most installers learn through employer training or a short technical program. BLS projects employment to grow 37% from 2025 to 2034, making it one of the fastest-growing occupations in the agency's projections.
Public safety telecommunicator
Median annual salary: $53,040
Public safety telecommunicators answer 911 calls and dispatch police, fire, and medical help from a headset and desk.
A high school diploma is typically required, followed by on-the-job training. Many states and localities also require certification. This role sits close to the $45,000 line in some markets, so hitting the higher end depends on local department pay and shift differentials.
Automotive service technician
Median annual salary: $50,620
Automotive service technicians inspect, maintain, and repair cars and light trucks, diagnosing problems with hand tools and shop computers.
A postsecondary program in automotive technology is typical, though some enter with just a high school diploma and learn on the job. BLS lists no prior work experience as necessary, and certification usually comes after hire.
Veterinary technician
Median annual salary: $47,380
Veterinary technicians perform lab tests, take X-rays, and assist veterinarians with exams and procedures, working hands-on with animals in clinics, hospitals, and labs.
An associate's degree from an accredited veterinary technology program covers the entry path for the technician track (a bachelor's degree applies to the technologist track, which typically pays more). Most states also require passing the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) and getting licensed, registered, or certified. BLS lists no prior work experience as necessary, and demand is projected to grow 9% through 2035, much faster than average.
Dental assistant
Median annual salary: $48,070
Dental assistants prepare patients and instruments, take X-rays, and keep records for a dentist in a dental office.
Requirements vary by state; some require a postsecondary certificate and exam, while others allow dental assistants to learn entirely on the job. BLS lists no prior work experience as necessary either way.
Parking enforcement worker
Median annual salary: $46,840
Parking enforcement workers patrol assigned areas, such as public lots or city streets, issuing tickets for parking violations.
A high school diploma covers the entry requirement, and training happens on the job over a short period. BLS lists no prior work experience as necessary to start.
Medical equipment preparer
Median annual salary: $45,280
Medical equipment preparers sterilize, install, and clean laboratory and healthcare equipment, keeping hospitals and clinics running behind the scenes.
A high school diploma covers the entry requirement, and BLS lists no prior work experience as necessary; demand is projected to grow faster than usual over the next decade.
Earn as much as $1K doing simple online tasks

Refuse and recyclable material collectors gather trash and recyclables along assigned routes, demanding outdoor work in all weather.
A high school diploma and a valid driver's license cover the entry requirement, with most training happening on the job over a few weeks. Overtime and route pay often push earnings above the median in many cities.
Bottom line
None of these roles requires a four-year degree or prior related work experience, but $45,000 isn't guaranteed the day someone starts. The fastest paths in tend to be a short postsecondary certificate (surgical tech, solar installation), a state licensing exam (physical therapy), or straightforward on-the-job training (parking enforcement, refuse collection), and the fastest paths to the higher end are overtime, shift differentials, or working in a market where demand outpaces supply.
Rather than assuming these jobs are out of reach without a degree, the more useful question is which certification or entry point could build real wealth fastest, then building from there.
