Consumer confidence is at a serious low, and economists from the Commerce Department were surprised to see end-of-year holiday spending come to a screeching halt in 2025, a sentiment that only seems to be worsening in 2026.

It shouldn't be a surprise that when the majority of people stop any gratuitous spending, it typically impacts store closures, and March is going to see more national chains closing locations to try and survive the economic squeeze.

Businesses that aren't helping consumers save money shopping are struggling to stay relevant, and many are missing the mark.

See which major retailers are closing stores in March 2026.

Macy's

  • South Windsor, Connecticut

Macy's is closing one distribution center this spring, in mid-March. About 57 layoffs are expected.

The department store giant is closing an additional 14 store locations this year.

Rite Aid

  • All Pennsylvania stores

Rite Aid announced the closure of all its remaining stores and pharmacies at the end of 2025. However, many remained in Pennsylvania, where the brand was founded. The legacy stores in Philadelphia and Harrisburg are closing, along with all the small-town locations throughout the state. Some of these locations are set to be transitioned to CVS, but many are simply going to be closed.

Eddie Bauer

  • All remaining stores

Liquidation sales at all Eddie Bauer stores kicked off in February, following a Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection filing. There are over 220 remaining locations that are set to close completely, pending a March 12 court-approved deadline to secure a buyer for their retail operations.

This is not slated to impact manufacturing, wholesale, or e-commerce operations as the parent company (Authentic Brands Group) is transitioning licenses for those operations.

Pizza Hut

  • Select locations nationwide

The well-known pizza chain is closing 250 locations in the first half of 2026. A full list of locations and closing dates does not yet appear to be public. However, the move is part of Pizza Hut's program to streamline and accelerate the brand in the long-term by closing underperforming stores now.

Between March and June, there are likely to be many closings, so check with your local Pizza Hut to see if they may be impacted.

Winn-Dixie

  • 500 Inverness Corners, Birmingham, AL
  • 4476 Montevallo Rd., Birmingham, AL

The supermarket chain announced in the fall of 2025 that it would be exiting the entire state of Alabama. They initially expected to be done by the end of the year, but several closings are still occurring in 2026, with several others having closed earlier this year.

Many of these locations are reopening under other grocery market brands, such as Food City and Piggly Wiggly. Several Winn-Dixies in Florida are also converting to a different grocery store, including five that are set to become Aldi stores.

Bahama Breeze Island Grille

  • All locations

All 28 remaining Bahama Breeze locations are set to close by April 5. Fourteen of the locations are going to be converted into other restaurants from within parent company Darden Restaurants' portfolio. The island-themed restaurant operates in Florida, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, New Jersey, Virginia, North Carolina, and Washington.

Amazon Fresh

  • All Southern California locations

All 19 Amazon Fresh store locations in Southern California are halting operations on March 13 for public-facing service. Filings with the state indicate that approximately 3,339 employees are impacted by the closings.

However, Amazon says it is trying to help them find roles elsewhere within the company. Those who are let go are receiving severance packages.

Denny's

  • Select locations nationwide

Late last year, Denny's finalized its sale to a private equity group, which confirmed they planned to close roughly 150 locations through early 2026. While specific locations have not yet been released, it is believed that any remaining locations that have cut their late-night hours or are in "outdated buildings" are at high risk of closing in March.

Noodles & Company

  • Select locations nationwide

The pasta-based restaurant chain announced in a January press release that it now plans to close 30 to 35 locations in 2026. This is on top of 42 locations that were shut down last year. Which locations are up on the chopping block has not yet been released, so you'll want to check with your local Noodles & Company to see if they are closing soon.

Bottom line

There are many factors contributing to the large-scale shuttering of stores that seemed infallible. Rising prices combined with dwindling salaries and massive layoffs have left the average American worried about necessities and cutting out spending on everything else.

Additionally, the closings of "anchor" stores like Macy's or other department stores could create a "mall death spiral" in which other smaller stores in the same shopping center could follow suit. This means you may have to find other places to shop and use your best cash back credit cards.

There are also consolidation impacts. When companies acquire their competition, it often means that underperforming or overlapping stores could be closed to avoid competing with themselves.
