9 Overpriced Target Items You Should Skip

Third-party sellers, seasonal decor, and spice jars that quietly drain your cart.

Target has a way of making every price tag feel reasonable, and that trust is exactly how the Target tax sneaks up on you. The aisles are easy to navigate, and the atmosphere is cozy.

Before you know it, you have grabbed a seasoning jar, a pumpkin candle, and a pack of batteries.

Some of the items are genuinely fine. Other items cost noticeably more for the same thing a warehouse club or discount grocer sells for less. Try these Target shopping hacks to help you tell the difference before you reach the register.

Editor's note: Prices and availability are subject to change and may vary by location.

Spanglish Asadero Al Pastor Seasoning

Courtesy of Target spanglish asadero

Price: $1.99

A 0.8-ounce jar of seasoning for taco night sounds harmless until you do the math, because that works out to $2.49 an ounce for a blend of sea salt, sugar, and spices. The flavor is fun on chicken or pork, but that rate is steep for a few shakes at a time.

The listing is also confusing. The product page shows $2.99 while the product line shows $1.99, and there is no regular price listed despite the sale-style markdown. It is unavailable at some stores, so you may end up shipping a two-dollar spice jar to your door.

Domino Premium Pure Cane Granulated Sugar

Price: $4.89

Sugar is sugar, which is exactly why paying up for the name on the bag feels unnecessary. This 4-pound bag comes out to $0.08 an ounce, which looks fine on paper, but you are still paying a national brand premium on the most interchangeable ingredient in the pantry.

Shoppers also mention bags showing up opened or with the sugar hardened into a brick, which turns a cheap staple into another trip back to the store. When the only reason to buy something is the price, that kind of hassle cancels out the savings.

Energizer Max AA Batteries

Courtesy of Target aa batteries

Price: $5.49

A 4-pack of name-brand AA batteries at $5.49 works out to about $1.37 per battery, and that adds up fast when you are restocking remotes, toys, and flashlights. Energizer claims up to 100% longer life than standard batteries and up to 15 years of shelf storage. Useful claims, just not at this rate.

One thing the page does not make obvious: several of the glowing featured reviews are tagged #ad or #TargetPartner, so they are sponsored posts rather than independent customer feedback. Larger pack sizes run up to 24 count here, and a bulk multipack almost anywhere else beats this price per cell.

2 Wick Medium Glass Fall Pumpkin Candle Jar

Price: $8.50 (on sale from $10.00)

This pumpkin-shaped jar candle is genuinely cute on a coffee table, and at $0.71 an ounce for 12 ounces with a roughly 40-hour burn, it is the mildest offender here. CrisC called it "Simple, beautiful, and smells delightful," and Kim wrote, "It is great quality for a reasonable price. Smells very nice."

The catch is getting one. Pickup is not available, stock is limited, and shoppers are told to visit the store in person to buy it. A seasonal candle you found online should not turn into a scavenger hunt across town.

Market Pantry Peanut Butter Filled Pretzels

Price: $11.59

At 44 ounces, this tub of peanut butter pretzels reads like a snack-aisle bargain at about $0.26 an ounce, and the flavor reviews back it up. One shopper wrote, "These are the absolute best peanut butter filled pretzels I can find," and JunaBee added, "Great price, yummy snack."

The complaints are harder to ignore. Buyers describe an ant infestation despite sealed storage, a lid that is nearly impossible to open, and a tub that arrived with the seal already broken. None of that shows up on the listing, and at nearly $12 a tub, it should.

iSpice Cardamom Seed Whole

Price: $12.99 (on sale from $26.99)

A $14 markdown sounds like a win until you look at what you are actually getting: $12.99 for 3.9 ounces of whole cardamom, or roughly $3.33 an ounce. That is specialty pricing, and the listing is sold and shipped by iSpice rather than Target, so you are buying marketplace goods on a familiar site.

Only seven shoppers have rated it, which is thin evidence for a spice at this price. Cardamom is worth keeping around for baking, but this one belongs on an occasional splurge list rather than a staples run.

Large Botanical Ceramic Pumpkin Cream

Price: $21.25 (on sale from $25.00)

This Studio McGee ceramic pumpkin is the neutral, raised-botanical kind of fall decor that looks expensive on a console table, and the clearance tag takes 15% off. Sandra wrote, "I like and like the quality," and Sml called it "Very nice neutral fall decor."

Still, $21.25 for one decorative pumpkin you box up in November is a lot. Pickup and shipping are both unavailable, so buying it means driving to a store with limited stock, and some buyers report pieces arriving damaged from shipping mishaps.

Tin Foil and Plastic Wrap Dispenser and Cutter

Price: $24.00

A bamboo organizer with dedicated slots and cutters for plastic, wax, and foil rolls sounds like a tidy fix for a messy drawer. The rating tells another story: 3.24 stars across 17 ratings, with 35% of reviewers giving it a single star.

Judy liked it with caveats, writing, "This item works well, if you have a gentle hand," and adding, "I love the amount of drawer space it saves."

Dharini had the opposite result: "It doesn't leave enough room for the foil to pull out and lay flat so you can get a good cut. Returned immediately." At $24, cutting foil should be easier than this.

Spice 'N Dulge Backyard Grill Spice and Seasonings Gift Set

Courtesy of Target backyard grill spice and seasonings gift set

Price: $36.98 (on sale from $37.98)

Twenty spices in a grill-themed gift set sounds like a solid present for the person who mans the smoker. A one-dollar discount off $37.98 is not much of a sale, though, and the set ships from Pop 'N Dulge rather than Target.

The page also does not spell out which 20 spices are actually in the box, and with just 12 ratings and no review text to go on, you are spending $36.98 somewhat blind. Someone who loves grilling may be delighted, but that is a lot to gamble on an unlisted assortment.

Bottom line

JHVEPhoto/Adobe storefront of target

Loyalty to one store is easy to earn and expensive to keep. Name-brand pantry staples, seasonal decor, and anything shipped by a marketplace seller are where the markups hide, because those listings borrow the trust the store built.

Store brands usually win on the basics, while specialty spices and one-off decorative pieces deserve a second look before they land in the cart.

The habit that saves the most is simple: pause on anything beyond pocket change and run the per-ounce number in your head. Loyalty perks help, and pairing them with the best cash back credit cards keeps more of every trip in your pocket.
