Food shopping has gotten more complicated than simply heading to the store and filling a cart in recent years. As prices remain high, many folks are looking for smarter ways to save money on groceries.

At the same time, budget-friendly chains like Aldi and Walmart are attracting more customers, while some regional favorites have increased prices, closed locations, or gotten more lax on quality.

That doesn't mean these stores should be avoided, but it does mean shoppers are letting value drive their decisions, perhaps more than ever.

Publix

Few would argue that shopping is still a pleasure at the Southeast regional grocery king, but many have noticed that prices seem to have skyrocketed.

Some have taken to calling it a "luxury" grocer, despite the famous BOGOs that are marketed to keep prices manageable. Critics say they don't offset costs when eggs, milk, meat, and more are notably more expensive than Aldi, a notable competitor.

Winn-Dixie

Winn-Dixie is often called an affordable competitor to Publix, as the two chains are widespread in the Southeast, notably in Florida and Georgia.

However, Many Winn-Dixies have closed their doors in the South, forcing their customer base to find alternatives like Aldi. Customers have also complained about the declining quality at Winn-Dixie stores, while some argue it was never very good.

Kroger

Redditors claiming to be Kroger employees have vented their frustration at prices, sharing that they struggle to afford to shop at the regional chain. Many say they stick to the discount section, use promotions, or go elsewhere entirely.

It remains to be seen if the upcoming price cuts announced by Kroger will put a dent in their food costs as they struggle to compete with Costco, Aldi, and Walmart.

Shaw's

Residents of New England are no strangers to the high cost of living, which may explain why shoppers are frustrated with the prices at Shaw's. Redditors who default to outlets like Hannaford expressed "shock" at the price of produce and other items.

According to Consumer Reports, only Whole Foods is more expensive among grocery stores, making it among the most expensive options out there, compared to Walmart.

Albertson's

Albertson's settled a lawsuit in late 2024 for allegedly overcharging customers for meat, produce, baked goods, and more, shelling out millions.

That's on top of Redditors suggesting that Albertsons caters to higher-income shoppers with its pricing and services. Albertson's is also closing stores across its brand profile, leaving folks more likely to head to its Aldi, Costco, and other outlets.

Harris Teeter

Consumer Reports has accused Harris Teeter of overcharging customers on items. For example, a pack of tortillas costs $0.50 more at the register than the shelf price, according to their report. Those numbers can add up fast.

Customers also claim that Aldi and Lidl have much lower prices in general. Others claim that the chain's customer base isn't as price-conscious as other shoppers, which Harris Teeter counts on.

Big Y

Big Y is known for promotions that cut prices on some items, but everything else is priced higher than Walmart, according to some shoppers. They're also known for their good service, but budget-conscious folks say the bottom line is better elsewhere.

Others say they prefer Aldi to Big Y because the latter is "ridiculously overpriced." Consumer Reports asserts that they're 26.2% more expensive, which tracks with these shopper reports.

Wegmans

Wegman's prices are only 7.6% higher than Walmart's, according to Consumer Reports, but that's enough to drive some customers away.

In particular, shoppers say the prepared foods, like cake, are exponentially more expensive than their competitors. That's caused folks to head to Costco when they need shrimp, chicken, and pizza, for example.

Stop & Shop

This Northeast regional grocery chain has been closing warehouses and retail locations in an effort to become "more profitable."

However, Consumer Reports shared that its prices are 22.2% more expensive than Walmart, which may be an issue for some shoppers who aren't surprised by the closures. Others have said that going to the store is "such a bad experience" due to understaffing and poor service.

Jewel-Osco

Residents of the Chicago area may be tired of shopping at Jewel-Osco due to what they say are very high costs compared to Aldi, Walmart, and other discount grocery chains.

Some say the coupons make the trip worthwhile, others that the process is too time-consuming when there are other options. Shoppers have complained that the store has foul odors and poor sanitation, too, which may be driving folks away.

Bottom line

Regional grocery chains may have great customer service, popular products, or local specialities, but more shoppers are asking if those benefits justify higher prices. For anyone trying to make it work on a fixed budget, the bottom line is more important than ever.

Whether that means switching to Aldi, joining Costco, or finding new ways to save money at Walmart, small changes add up. One strategy is opting for store brands, which may have similar quality at a lower price, saving you money in the long run.
