Another area where the population is growing, but retirees can still find the calm they're looking for in smaller locales. Brownsville is a beautiful community, rich in history, and has a walkability score of 87 out of 100 (meaning "very walkable").

While the larger area has a population of 190,000, several areas in and around Brownsville (like Lasara, Villa Nueva, and Havana) have as few as 300 residents..

Joplin, Missouri

With a population of 51,000 residents, Joplin is a quintessential small town although residents say it has a larger city feel. It's also a key stop on historic Route 66, which means it offers a lot to do and see.

Although it's slightly higher when it comes to budget, you'll find the small town charm can't be beat with roughly 13,000 local residents.

Rochester, New York

Another one that is on the higher end of the budget, but it offers some perks that are sure to benefit retirees. It's home to the University of Rochester Medical Center, which puts top-tier medical care right outside your door.

Although the main city has a large population, cetrain communities in the area like Lima, Hemlock, and Springwater, have as few as 2,000 residents.

Rockford, Illinois

For Rockford, the average home value remains consistently under $175,000. Like other areas, the city itself has a larger population. However, some communities like Timberlane or Caledonia have fewer than 1,000 people.

The town was once a manufacturing hub, but you don't have to worry about being surrounded by factories. Rockford is undergoing revitalization with the addition of public gardens, museums, a new Hard Rock Casino, and the popular Anderson Japanese Gardens.

Vincennes, Indiana
