Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) disclosed a Google Cloud backlog of $514 billion at the end of the second quarter, and the capital required to service the pipeline shapes the calculus for shareholders doing better financially through large-cap technology exposure.

Second-quarter revenue reached $119.8 billion, a 24% year-over-year increase, and operating income rose to $40.8 billion. Alphabet raised 2026 capital expenditure (capex) guidance to $195 billion to $205 billion to fund the artificial intelligence (AI) buildout, but free cash flow turned negative at $5.9 billion, and on core earnings the stock trades closer to 33 times, not the 17 times GAAP earnings suggest.

Google Cloud's $514 billion backlog grew $54 billion in a single quarter

The $514 billion backlog at the end of June grew from $460 billion at the end of the first quarter, and from $106 billion a year earlier, a nearly fivefold year-over-year increase, The National News documented. The 12% sequential growth added $54 billion in contracted commitments in a single quarter, reflecting the pace at which enterprise AI customers are signing long-term cloud reservations.

Over 50% of the backlog is expected to be recognized as revenue within 24 months, The National News noted. The recognition timeline means roughly $257 billion in contracted revenue should flow through the income statement by mid-2028, assuming customers honor the commitments at the scheduled pace.

'We are seeing very strong demand, and our goal is to invest as long as we see an attractive return'

Cloud operating income tripled to $8.8 billion from $2.8 billion a year earlier, expanding the segment margin to 35.6% from 20.7%, Fierce Network outlined. The margin expansion coincided with the start of revenue recognition from Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) system sales, with the majority of that hardware revenue deferred to 2027.

"We are seeing very strong demand, and our goal is to invest as long as we see an attractive return," Anat Ashkenazi, Alphabet's chief financial officer (CFO), said, Fierce Network reported. She added that supply constraints persist despite significant capacity increases, a signal that the backlog reflects contracted demand rather than speculative pre-ordering, but the spending required to close the capacity gap compresses cash generation in the near term.

Alphabet raised 2026 capex guidance to $195 billion to $205 billion

Alphabet raised its 2026 capex guidance to $195 billion to $205 billion from a prior estimate of roughly $190 billion, exceeding the analyst consensus of $186 billion, The National News documented. Second-quarter capex of $44.9 billion more than doubled from $22.4 billion in the same period a year earlier, Fierce Network noted.

The capex includes investment in proprietary TPUs that Alphabet expects to generate returns within two years, half the timeline of GPU-based infrastructure, The Motley Fool noted. The cost advantage of custom silicon is central to whether the $195 billion to $205 billion converts to margin-accretive capacity or sustained cash consumption.

Cloud revenue surged 82% to $24.8 billion with a 35.6% operating margin

Google Cloud's 82% revenue growth to $24.8 billion beat the analyst consensus of $22.46 billion by roughly 10%, The National News showed. This surge is backed up by the following factors.

  • The 35.6% cloud operating margin expanded from 20.7% a year earlier, reflecting scale efficiencies and the mix shift toward higher-margin AI workloads.
  • Google Cloud's 82% growth outpaced both AWS at 37% and Microsoft Azure at 43%, placing it first among the three largest providers by percentage increase.
  • "Strong demand for AI infrastructure and AI solutions" drove the acceleration, CEO Sundar Pichai said.

Free cash flow turned negative at $5.9 billion as capex consumed operating cash

Free cash flow dropped to negative $5.9 billion in the second quarter from positive $10.1 billion in the first quarter and positive $5.3 billion a year earlier, Fierce Network showed. The reversal occurred despite operating income of $40.8 billion because capex of $44.9 billion and other investing activities consumed more than the company generated from operations.

Analysts at Circular Technology identified bill-of-material inflation as a defining theme for the second half of 2026, with cost pressure extending beyond GPU shortages to the broader electronics supply chain, Fierce Network outlined. The combination of rising component costs and accelerating spend creates a structural drag on free cash flow that may persist into 2027.

GAAP net income of $112.1 billion masks a core multiple closer to 33 times

GAAP net income of $112.1 billion in the second quarter compressed the trailing price-to-earnings ratio to roughly 17 times at the $4.2 trillion market capitalization, AIvest noted. The figure includes non-operating gains that do not recur, and stripping them out places the stock closer to 33 times core earnings, a materially different valuation from the headline number.

The forward price-to-earnings multiple of roughly 29 times adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $11.81 reflects the market's view of the underlying business, The Motley Fool documented. The gap between the GAAP multiple and the core multiple means investors relying on headline earnings ratios may underestimate the price they are paying relative to recurring profit.

Anthropic committed $200 billion to Google Cloud over five years

Anthropic committed roughly $200 billion to Google Cloud over five years, The Motley Fool reported. This adds a single-customer contract that represents a meaningful share of the $514 billion backlog. The deal secures compute capacity for training and deploying Claude on Google's infrastructure alongside Anthropic's existing relationship with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Revenue from TPU system sales began in the second quarter, with the majority of that hardware revenue deferred to 2027, and Ashkenazi described the ramp as continuing through the year, Fierce Network showed. The TPU revenue stream adds a hardware-sale component to what has traditionally been a services-only segment, diversifying the cloud division's income profile.

Bottom line

Alphabet's $514 billion cloud backlog and 82% revenue growth rate represent the fastest expansion among the three largest cloud providers, but the $195 billion to $205 billion capex plan and negative free cash flow of $5.9 billion show the cost of sustaining it. The 33-times core multiple, not the 17-times GAAP headline, is the valuation investors are absorbing.

The backlog recognition timeline, capex-absorption pace, and the gap between contracted commitments and quarterly billed revenue should inform how shareholders track their positions through must-have investing apps, because the pipeline depends on continued spending to deliver, and the spread between the revenue it promises and the cash it consumes carries the risk the growth rate alone does not capture.
