It's easy to get wrapped up in the pretty photos when you're booking a vacation. You see a destination on Instagram, you pick the best hotel and book all the right activities, then you arrive…and it's less than you expected.

Unfortunately, it's easy for destinations to get over-hyped. Altered photos, videos taken at sunrise before other tourists have arrived, and exaggerated opinions can all make a place look too good to be true. And, when you're booking a bucket list trip to travel more, it's frustrating to feel like you were sold a vision that doesn't exist.

Luckily, we have the intel on the places that you should avoid visiting if you want the best experience. These are places that continuously disappoint travelers looking to book a vacation.

Tulum, Mexico

At one time, Tulum was the gem of Mexico's beach towns. It was seen as bohemian and ethereal compared to the party towns, like Cancun. But, today, it is overcrowded with tourists and, for many, it has suffered the plight of becoming too popular, which is the exact opposite of why it was so appealing to begin with.

Reddit user kacksjidney had just this experience: "Tulum is being overrun by tourism and the prices and infrastructure have gotten much worse…Tulum is now a very expensive tourist destination and the beauty is being overrun and therefore is no longer nearly as enjoyable to visit."

Disney World

Most first-timers know a trip to Disney World is going to be expensive, but they're often not prepared for just how pricey it's going to be. And, when you're spending money hand over fist, you want an absolutely idyllic experience.

That's not exactly what you're going to get at Disney. Instead, you're likely going to spend your time waiting in line, whether that be waiting for food, waiting for rides, or waiting for shows. It's a lot of waiting, though many people love it — when they go in with the right expectations.

San Francisco, California

San Francisco has a reputation as a beloved U.S. city, but some people believe it has lost its appeal in recent years, like Reddit user jtothehello. "I feel like it has lost its charm over the years"

Reports cite that city has struggled with drugs, homelessness, and other issues, which may make it less than ideal for travel for some. But as jtothehello points out, there are still reasons to visit. "Food scene is amazing though."

Kuta, Bali, Indonesia

Bali has a reputation as one of the most beautiful and peaceful places on earth. People still think of it as the Eat, Pray, Love destination where you can find love amidst the jungle scenery in dreamy and remote Southeast Asia.

But if you go to Kuta, one of the big beach towns in Bali, you may find yourself disappointed. Instead of paradise, it's often cited as a busy, highly commercialized resort destination filled with tourists, American and Australian chains, and places geared towards a less-than-authentic experience.

Times Square, New York

New York is always romanticized in movies and on social media, but the reality is sometimes less than appealing, particularly if you're in the hubbub of Times Square. As Reddit user masonvam says, "It's just an extremely crowded junction with thousands of annoying billboards and ads bombarded at your face. It's most likely one of the loudest places in the US."

A 2024 survey by Preply even named the destination the most chaotic tourist trap in the world. Just over 1,700 people called it "overrated," "underwhelming," or "a tourist trap."

Pisa, Italy

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of those places that makes a big impression on children when they learn about it in elementary school, and that's probably why so many people add it to their list when they visit Italy.

But the allure of this leaning tower is very different than the reality on a hot, sweaty day in Italy. Instead, you'll find a place overrun with tourists, all lining up for their chance at a photo that looks like they're holding up the tower (you know the one). That's why this Italian city is probably one to skip.

A 2026 report by STasher even named one of Los Angeles's top attractions, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as the world's most disappointing tourist destination after analyzing 101 of the world's most iconic sights.

Keep in mind, all of these destinations could be worth visiting, depending on personal preferences. The key is not getting caught up in what you see online. You're not going to be the only person in Times Square or surrounded by a remote paradise in Cancun. Travel spots are popular for a reason. Have accurate expectations going in, and remember, you're all there to enjoy the destination.
