In today's job market, the threat of artificial intelligence (AI) seems to be growing. Of course, some jobs are more at risk of disappearing than others. But regardless of your profession, this shaky future makes it more important than ever to diversify your income streams, build your savings, and find ways to safeguard your future from AI.

This guide explores the several types of jobs that billionaire Mark Cuban thinks may disappear in the next decade.

Entry-level programming

AI is becoming proficient at many of the programming tasks entry-level programmers used to handle.

"So, jobs like writing software and programming that seem like great jobs, at the lower end, they'll be gone," said Cuban in an interview with the Dallas Business Journal.

At one point, college students were flocking to this degree because it offered a lucrative career path. But now, this career could be less than secure.

Data entry

Repetitive tasks, like data entry, are likely at risk of being replaced by AI. After all, these tools are getting better at handling routine tasks like this.

"If you work for software, or if you are in a position that you're doing the same job, or it's a repetitive job, over and over, or if you're in a rules-based job — if this, then that — there's a good chance your job's going to be displaced over the next ten years," said Cuban in an interview with Alex Marlow.

Middle managers

Many middle managers spent a lot of time analyzing their employees' performance. In the age of AI, the right tools can start to take over this task. It could put many middle managers out of a job at some point.

"It's not the entry-level jobs that are going first — it's middle management," said Cuban in an interview for The AI Download. "If your job is just managing people or organizing data, you better learn AI — because AI is learning your job."

Financial analysis work

Looking at a string of numbers on a spreadsheet and deciding what to do next is something that AI is getting great at. With that, people who do basic financial analysis work may soon find themselves out of a job.

"No finance. That's the easiest thing — you just take the data have it spit out whatever you need," said Cuban in an interview with Business Insider.

Spreadsheet management

Many of the small but important tasks that keep an office running may soon be handled by AI.

"Every company has stuff that doesn't get done because it would require someone to sit with a spreadsheet for hours. Or to count things. Or to edit. Or to check receipts for accuracy," said Cuban in an interview with Fortune. "These things can be done with agents and save small companies cash and improve productivity and competitiveness."

Customer service

If you're answering customer questions via email or chat, it's likely that your job will be less secure in the coming years. AI chatbots can typically answer most customer questions, even if some would still prefer the special touch that human service provides.

"If you already have a business, the things that you've considered outsourcing, you know, your customer center, your customer call centers, whatever it may be, AI agents are perfect for," said Cuban on the Big Technology Podcast.

Administrative tasks in the healthcare field

If you've ever dealt with any part of the healthcare industry, you've likely realized there's a massive amount of paperwork involved. That mountain of paperwork has created a mountain of jobs. But with the advent of AI, there may be fewer jobs available to handle administrative tasks in the healthcare field going forward.

"We're cutting out middlemen and inefficiencies in the system," said Cuban in an interview for The AI Download. "AI is not replacing doctors — but it is making their jobs easier and lowering costs for patients."

What's sticking around?

Of course, AI isn't going to take every job under the sun. In case you haven't noticed, the common theme across the jobs at risk of being taken over by AI includes repetitive, computer-based tasks. As AI gets better, it can take over many of these tedious tasks for us. But it can't do it alone. It needs a critical thinker to direct it.

Cuban suggests, "We're going to come back full circle where the valuable crafts are going to be teaching, liberal arts, philosophy, math and science. Because once all the machines are doing all the work of calculating, someone's got to interpret. You have to be a thinker. You have to learn how to learn."

Bottom line

It's clear that AI is reshaping the job market. If your job seems at risk of replacement, it might be a good time to start building out new skills or even new income streams to help you weather a potential job loss. Also, consider cleaning up your financial situation by paying off debt or building emergency savings to give you some space to pivot if you need to in the future.
