Michael Burry called Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:PLTR) "a consultant riding a bubble of AI FOMO demand" and warned its roughly $432 billion market capitalization could eventually fall below $100 billion, according to posts on X on September 3, 2026.

Burry holds put options against the stock and has been vocal about his short position since November 2025. Assessing where you stand financially relative to a stock where the bull case and the bear case are both built on specific numbers is exactly the exercise this data demands, and this is Burry's full argument.

Burry's case that Palantir resembles Accenture more than Salesforce

Burry argued that Palantir's deferred-revenue-to-revenue ratio of approximately 32% is closer to Accenture's 31% than to SaaS peers like Salesforce or ServiceNow, Seeking Alpha reported.

  • Deferred-revenue-to-revenue ratio of roughly 32%, nearly matching Accenture's consulting profile.
  • Receivables of $1.49 billion as of June 30, 2026, up from $1.04 billion at the end of 2025.
  • One customer accounts for 27% of receivables, despite no single customer generating more than 10% of revenue.
  • Receivables grew faster than revenue in nine of the previous twelve quarters.

Burry's point is that Palantir's financial profile looks more like a labor-intensive consulting business than a scalable software platform, and the stock's premium multiple assumes the latter.

A market cap collapse below $100 billion would mean a 75% decline

Burry said Palantir's market valuation "may eventually sink below $100 billion," representing a decline of more than 75% from its approximately $432 billion level as of early September 2026, BigGo Finance reported. He added that even if the corporate AI scramble lasts several more years, "the fall will be just as epic, or more so."

A $100 billion valuation would place Palantir at roughly 12 times its projected $8.15 billion in 2026 revenue, a multiple more consistent with enterprise software companies growing at 20% to 30% rather than 93%. Your assessment of whether that target is realistic depends on how much of Palantir's current growth you consider sustainable.

Q2 revenue surged 93% to $1.935 billion despite Burry's critique

Palantir's second-quarter revenue reached $1.935 billion, up 93% year over year, with U.S. commercial revenue jumping 149% to $764 million and U.S. government revenue climbing 90% to $809 million, as Yahoo Finance confirmed. Management raised full-year 2026 guidance to $8.15 billion.

The operational results directly contradict the bear case in the near term. Revenue acceleration from 93% growth alongside 149% U.S. commercial growth is not what a struggling consulting business typically produces. The tension between exceptional growth and Burry's structural concerns is what makes this stock polarizing.

Burry flagged $9 billion in tax losses and a canceled buyback

Burry criticized Palantir's $9 billion in federal net operating losses and noted the company ended a $1 billion share buyback authorization in 2025 after repurchasing just over $75 million, BigGo Finance reported.

He declared that "the stock price funds compensation, generates the tax-shield through NOLs," implying Palantir relies on its elevated share price to compensate employees and fund operations. Stock-based compensation totaled $265 million in the second quarter of 2026, and CEO Alex Karp's aircraft expenses of $17.2 million drew additional criticism from Burry, BigGo Finance added.

Palantir rallied 7% on September 3 on an expanded PwC alliance

Palantir shares rose 7% on September 3, 2026, after the company announced an expanded alliance with PwC US centered on an AI-native deals platform, 24/7 Wall St. reported. The move was seen as a direct rebuttal to Burry's consulting critique, though the timing may have been coincidental.

A partnership with a Big Four consulting firm may seem ironic given Burry's argument that Palantir resembles one, but the market interpreted it as validation of demand for Palantir's platform among enterprise buyers rather than confirmation of Burry's thesis.

96 times forward earnings with Burry holding put options against it

Palantir trades at approximately 96 times forward earnings as of September 3, a multiple that leaves minimal room for a miss, StockAnalysis data showed. Burry disclosed he holds put options against the stock, a position that profits when shares decline.

Palantir shares fell roughly 6% on September 2 before rebounding to approximately 8% on September 3, illustrating the kind of daily volatility a stock at this valuation experiences, Yahoo Finance documented. For your portfolio, a stock that can move 6% to 8% in a single session on commentary rather than earnings carries inherent positioning risk.

Risks of siding with either the bull case or the bear case

Burry's track record includes prescient calls and early shorts that lost money before paying off, sometimes by years. His bearish Palantir thesis has been active since November 2025, and the stock has risen significantly during that period. Timing a short against a stock with 93% revenue growth is dangerous even when the valuation arguments hold merit.

You may also want to consider the receivables concentration risk. One customer holding 27% of a $1.49 billion receivables balance while contributing less than 10% of revenue creates a collection-risk profile that could affect cash flow if that relationship changes.

Bottom line

Burry's case rests on specific financial data rather than broad skepticism. A 32% deferred-revenue ratio, $1.49 billion in receivables with 27% customer concentration, and a canceled buyback present a picture of a business that may not match its software-company narrative. The Q2 results showing 93% revenue growth and 149% U.S. commercial growth present the opposite picture.

Screening for the financial details Burry flagged is the kind of work that the must-have investing apps on your phone can make faster. The gap between the bull narrative and the bear narrative is wide enough that your position may depend less on which side you believe and more on how much valuation risk your retirement portfolio can absorb at 96 times forward earnings.
