Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) traded at $212.47 in Monday afternoon trading, a -$5.82 move, or -2.67%, from its previous close of $218.29. Owning shares in the AI chipmaker has been one of the clearest signs of financial success for retail investors over the past two years, but Monday's session tested that narrative. The stock opened at $212.21 and stayed under pressure as investors focused on the AI demand and regulatory arguments now surrounding parts of the chipmaker's growth story.

AI pace worries

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a weekend essay calling for a deliberate slowdown in AI model capability development. The essay mattered for Nvidia because the company's recent growth has been closely tied to demand for high-end GPUs used in artificial intelligence systems, and the call raised concerns that a coordinated pullback in AI advancement could cool that demand.

GPUs are processors built to handle many calculations at once. That makes them central to training and running large AI models, which are among the workloads driving Nvidia's data center sales.

Trading range is tight

NVDA has traded between $208.93 and $212.77 so far Monday, with the intraday high only slightly above the $212.21 open. The narrow range shows the stock has not recovered much ground after the early selloff.

The current price of $212.47 puts shares closer to the session high than the low. Still, the stock remains below the previous close of $218.29.

DOJ review adds uncertainty

The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating whether Nvidia structured its $17 billion licensing deal with AI startup Groq to avoid antitrust scrutiny, according to a Reuters report citing The New York Times. The department reportedly opened the inquiry shortly after the transaction was announced and later sent Nvidia a formal request for information.

The arrangement was described as a non-exclusive license to Groq's chip technology. Nvidia also hired several Groq executives, including founder Jonathan Ross, while Groq remained independent. That structure is the focus of the reported antitrust review.

Analysts still lean bullish

Barchart's compiled analyst data lists Nvidia with a consensus rating of "Strong Buy." The same data shows a mean price target of about $325, implying roughly 45% upside from the levels cited in that analysis.

That bullish backdrop is being tested by the latest pullback. The market is weighing whether regulatory scrutiny and the AI policy debate could slow the spending assumptions behind Nvidia's valuation.

Growth expectations remain high

Nvidia posted fiscal second-quarter 2027 revenue of $96.2 billion, up 106% year over year. The company also posted non-GAAP earnings per share of $2.22 and data center revenue of $89 billion.

Non-GAAP results exclude some costs that standard accounting includes. Management also guided for third-quarter revenue of approximately $108 billion, keeping attention on whether large cloud customers continue to spend aggressively on AI infrastructure.

Industry reactions matter

The selloff is tied less to a product update and more to a broader debate over how fast AI should advance. Amodei's essay raised concern that a coordinated slowdown in frontier model development could reduce the urgency of new chip purchases, even though the actual effect on orders remains uncertain.

Nvidia is also reportedly in talks to invest up to $10 billion as an anchor investor in Anthropic's planned initial public offering. That potential link drew attention because Anthropic's CEO is central to the debate pressuring AI chip shares.

Bottom line

NVDA is lower Monday as AI pace concerns, reported DOJ scrutiny, and valuation questions converge. Anyone planning to start investing in AI-linked names should weigh these crosscurrents carefully before sizing a position. The next focus for market watchers is whether demand signals from data center customers stay strong enough to offset the policy and regulatory noise around the AI trade.
