Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ:PLTR) posted second-quarter revenue of $1.94 billion, up 93% year over year, with U.S. commercial growth hitting 149%, the company's SEC filing confirmed. UBS analyst Karl Keirstead responded by lifting his price target to $250 from $220 while maintaining a Buy rating, the third increase from UBS this year.

The bull case has shifted from broad AI momentum to what CEO Alex Karp calls "AI sovereignty," a framework where enterprises retain control of their data rather than handing it to hyperscalers. Taking the time to check up on your financial health before holding a stock at 51 times expected 2027 free cash flow is worth the effort.

UBS raised its Palantir price target to $250 in its third increase of 2026

Keirstead's target started at $200 in June, climbed to $220 in early August, and now stands at $250, CryptoBriefing detailed. The latest increase followed Palantir's AIPCon customer event, where Keirstead observed strong demand momentum and concluded that investor concerns about a near-term growth peak were overstated.

The broader Wall Street consensus tells a more cautious story. The average analyst price target hovers around $199, with Jefferies analyst Brent Thill carrying an Underperform rating and an $80 target, roughly 54% below recent trading levels, BigGo Finance indicated. The range between the most bullish target of $255 and Thill's $80 illustrates how polarizing Palantir remains.

Q2 revenue surged 93% to $1.94 billion with U.S. commercial growth at 149%

Palantir's second-quarter results showed acceleration across every major line, the company's SEC filing showed. Key figures include the following.

  • Revenue of $1.94 billion, up 93% year over year and above the $1.80 billion consensus.
  • U.S. commercial revenue of $764 million, up 149%, with a record total contract value of $2.13 billion.
  • U.S. government revenue of $809 million, up 90% year over year.
  • GAAP operating income of $912 million at a 47% margin, with adjusted operating margin reaching 62%.

Palantir raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $8.15 billion to $8.16 billion, implying 82% annual growth and well above the prior $7.65 billion outlook, CNBC confirmed. CEO Karp described the quarter as "otherworldly" and committed to keeping company-wide growth at or above U.S. commercial rates for the next 18 months.

The AI sovereignty thesis replaced broad AI momentum as the core bull case

Karp framed the company's opportunity around "AI sovereignty" in his latest shareholder letter, arguing that enterprises want to deploy artificial intelligence without surrendering control of their data, operations, or decision-making, BigGo Finance wrote. "A global movement is emerging. The revolution for independence and AI sovereignty is now well underway," Karp stated.

D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria separately raised his own target to $250, calling Palantir the "control plane, orchestration layer, and harness provider" for enterprises choosing their own AI models, Investing.com explained. The shift in framing matters for your portfolio because it narrows the bull case from general AI enthusiasm to a specific bet on whether enterprises prioritize data control over convenience.

The Maven Smart System contract is approaching a $1 billion annual run rate

William Blair highlighted the expansion of Palantir's Maven Smart System contract with the Pentagon, projecting it could trend toward a billion-dollar annual revenue run rate, Investing.com disclosed. The Maven deal, Palantir's largest single contract according to FinanceTracked, anchors the government side of the business at a scale that few defense software providers have achieved.

U.S. government revenue grew 90% to $809 million in Q2, and the Pentagon relationship provides recurring revenue visibility that commercial contracts often lack. For retirees weighing PLTR, the government business offers more predictability, though both segments carried growth above 90%.

Model providers competing in Palantir's data layer represent the key downside risk

Keirstead acknowledged that AI model providers expanding into the data orchestration layer Palantir occupies is the primary bear case, CryptoBriefing outlined. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella warned in July that businesses "essentially pay for intelligence twice" when they rely on outside model providers, a dynamic that could either help or hurt Palantir depending on which side enterprises choose.

Karp escalated that framing, cautioning that businesses risk migrating their proprietary expertise to a model provider's training data, TheStreet reported. The risk for your position is that companies like OpenAI, Google, and Amazon build data-handling capabilities directly into their model platforms, reducing the need for Palantir's orchestration layer over time.

The stock trades at roughly 51 times the expected 2027 free cash flow

Palantir's adjusted free cash flow reached $1.22 billion in Q2, and the company guided full-year 2026 adjusted free cash flow to $4.5 billion to $4.7 billion, the SEC filing detailed. Palantir's valuation is extreme, with the stock trading at a P/E of 249 and a forward P/E of 112, though bulls argue the premium is justified by 93% revenue growth that dwarfs peers like ServiceNow and Snowflake, 24/7 Wall St. flagged.

Stock-based compensation of $265 million in Q2 continues to dilute existing holders, though bulls argue it reflects hiring needed to sustain 82% guided revenue growth. The valuation asks you to believe growth at this rate persists long enough to compress the multiple into a conventional range, a bet most retirement portfolios are not built for.

Bottom line

Palantir's 93% revenue growth and 149% U.S. commercial acceleration are extraordinary by any software standard, and UBS raising its target to $250 for the third time in 2026 reflects genuine conviction. The bull case has narrowed from general AI optimism to a specific bet on AI sovereignty, a framework where enterprises keep control of their data rather than outsourcing it to model providers.

Tracking this name with must-have investing apps could help you monitor whether the sovereignty thesis translates into sustained growth or whether model providers eventually absorb the data layer Palantir occupies. At 51 times 2027 free cash flow and a trailing P/E above 200, the stock demands that growth persist at a pace few companies in history have maintained, a profile that makes it a volatile holding most retirement portfolios are not designed to carry.
