A Sam's Club membership can pay for itself quickly, but not every giant tub, flashy bakery tray, or "premium" Member's Mark item deserves a spot in your cart. Some disappoint on quality, and others are simply too big to use before they go bad.

This list rounds up 11 popular Sam's Club products that shoppers say fall short, from seasonal pumpkin blondies and iced cinnamon rolls to a $90 seafood boil kit with a 2.9-star rating. Skipping them is one of the easiest ways to get the most out of your Sam's membership and save money at Sam's Club.

Member's Mark Pumpkin Cream Cheese Blondies

Courtesy of Sam's Club pumpkin cream cheese blondies

Price: $8.62

Pumpkin everything is back, and these blondies are front and center in the bakery case. The 9-count tray (26 ounces total) promises a loaf-style treat swirled with pumpkin spice and cream cheese, and at 96 cents apiece, it's easy to toss one in the cart on impulse.

The reviews are far less festive. The blondies hold a 3.8-star average from 388 ratings, and nearly a quarter of those shoppers gave them just one or two stars. Common complaints include a dry, cookie-like texture, too little cream cheese, and spice that overpowers the pumpkin.

If you're craving a fall treat, it may be worth grabbing a smaller bakery item you already know your family likes, or baking a batch of pumpkin bars at home where you control the spice, sweetness, and amount of cream cheese.

Member's Mark Everwash Washable Runner and Accent Rug Set

Courtesy of Sam's Club washable runner and accent rug set

Price: $34.98

A machine-washable rug sounds like a dream for anyone with pets, grandkids, or a busy entryway. This two-piece set includes a 2-by-7-foot runner and a 2-foot-by-3-foot-7-inch accent rug with non-skid backing, in assorted styles that include a distressed vintage look.

The catch is in the care instructions and the reviews. The set has a 3.5-star rating from just 23 ratings, and 30% of reviewers gave it one or two stars. Two of the lowest reviews say the cut pile gets caught in the vacuum, and one shopper noted the long runner is too big for her home washing machine.

Shopper Rachel put it bluntly: "Be aware that you cannot in any way, shape, or form vacuum these rugs."

Member's Mark Spanish Style Paprika

Courtesy of Sam's Club spanish style paprika

Price: $8.78

Shoppers love this paprika, and it earns a 4.7-star rating. The problem isn't quality — it's quantity. The container holds a whopping 18 ounces, which is far more than most home cooks will sprinkle on deviled eggs, chicken, and potato salad before the spice starts to lose its punch.

Ground spices fade over time, so that bargain price of 49 cents an ounce only pays off if you actually use it while it's fresh. Otherwise, you're paying for dusty red powder at the back of the cabinet.

A 2.12-ounce bottle of McCormick Kosher Paprika costs $2.62 at Walmart. It's pricier per ounce, but unless you cook for a crowd or run a barbecue joint, buying small and fresh keeps $6 in your pocket.

Member's Mark Rising Crust Four Cheese Pizza

Courtesy of Sam's Club four cheese pizza

Price: $13.76

Three frozen pizzas for under $14 looks like an easy weeknight win. Each pie bakes in 21 to 23 minutes at 415 degrees and is topped with mozzarella, provolone, and a sweet marinara, so it seems tailor-made for busy families and grandkid sleepovers.

Shoppers aren't sold. The pizza holds a 3.6-star rating from 959 ratings, and 28% of reviewers gave it just one or two stars. Three-packs also eat up a lot of freezer space, which is valuable real estate when you shop in bulk.

At $4.59 per pizza, the Sam's Club version is cheaper than a DiGiorno Rising Crust Four Cheese Pizza, which costs $5.97 at Walmart. But if your family doesn't love the Member's Mark pie, that $1.38 savings disappears fast when leftovers end up in the trash.

Member's Mark 3-Piece Cotton-TENCEL Sateen Comforter Set

Courtesy of Sam's Club sateen comforte set

Price: $49.98

On paper, this comforter set checks every box. You get a comforter and two zippered shams in full/queen or king, a silky cotton and TENCEL sateen weave, machine-washable care, and a palette of colors that includes blue, brown, green, grey, pink, teal, and white.

In practice, it's earned a middling 3.7-star rating from 62 ratings. That's not a disaster, but for a bedding purchase you'll live with every night and wash again and again, it's a lukewarm endorsement for something marketed as luxurious, silky, and breathable.

Bedding is also one of the easiest categories to find on sale elsewhere, especially around holiday and white sales. Before you spend $50 here, it's worth comparing a few higher-rated sets so you're not stuck with a comforter that doesn't live up to its luxurious description.

Member's Mark Seafood Boil Kit

Courtesy of Sam's Club seafood boil kit

Price: $90.98

A ready-to-cook seafood boil for about six people sounds like an easy way to host a crowd. This frozen kit includes two pounds of snow crab legs and claws, three pounds of tail-on shrimp, yellow and red potatoes, corn, and a seasoning packet, and Sam's Club says it's ready in about 30 minutes.

At $90.98, or about $10.54 a pound, it's a big splurge, and it's the lowest-rated product on our list at 2.9 stars. Of its 16 ratings, 38% are one-star reviews. Reviewers complain about mushy potatoes, flavorless corn, and a seasoning packet with an odd aftertaste, and some note it's cheaper to buy the shrimp and crab separately.

Shopper Michele summed up her experience: "Just an overall BIG disappointment!"

Daisy Pure and Natural Sour Cream

Courtesy of Sam's Club natural sour cream

Price: $5.54

There's nothing wrong with Daisy sour cream itself — it has a stellar 4.9-star rating from more than 7,400 ratings. The issue is the 48-ounce tub. That's three pounds of sour cream, and unless you're feeding a big family or hosting taco night every week, an opened container only lasts so long in the fridge.

On paper, the Sam's Club tub is the better deal at about 11.5 cents an ounce. But if half of it gets tossed, your real cost per ounce doubles.

A 16-ounce tub of the same Daisy Pure and Natural Sour Cream costs $2.64 at Walmart. If a pound is all you'll realistically use, the smaller tub saves you nearly $3 and a lot of food waste.

Member's Mark 10-Piece Modern Tri-Ply Cookware Set

Courtesy of Sam's Club tri ply cookware set

Price: $156.00

A tri-ply stainless steel cookware set is an investment, and this one has plenty of appealing specs. It includes 2-, 3-, 4-, and 6-quart pieces plus 9.5- and 11-inch sauté pans, tempered glass lids, an aluminum core for even heating, and dual-riveted handles. It's induction-ready, dishwasher-safe, and oven-safe to 450 degrees without the lids.

The concern is how few shoppers have weighed in. The set has a 4-star rating from only 21 ratings, and 14% of those are one-star reviews. For a $156 purchase, that's a small and somewhat shaky track record.

Before you commit, read the reviews closely and consider whether you need all 10 pieces. Many cooks get more use out of two or three quality pans than a full set that crowds the cabinets.

Member's Mark Iced Cinnamon Rolls

Courtesy of Sam's Club iced cinnamon rolls

Price: $9.62

Warm, gooey cinnamon rolls are hard to resist, and this 8-count package is baked fresh in-club daily and topped with creamy icing. At $1.20 per roll, they seem like an easy pick for holiday breakfasts or a family brunch.

Unfortunately, these rolls are a gamble. They hold a 3.6-star rating from 829 ratings, and 31% of reviewers gave them just one or two stars. The most common complaints are that the rolls arrive stale, tough, or hard, and some shoppers say quality varies from one package to the next.

If you do buy them, check the package date and plan to serve them the same day. Warming them briefly in the oven can help, but it won't rescue a stale batch.

Shopper Rich didn't mince words: "Tough, tasteless, not good."

Member's Mark 2-Pack Cooling Pillow

Courtesy of Sam's Club 2 pack cooling pillow

Price: $19.98

If you sleep hot, a two-pack of cooling pillows for under $20 sounds like a bargain. These 20-by-28-inch pillows feature a cool-to-the-touch fabric shell, quilted channel stitching, and a soothing heather blue color, and they're machine washable.

The problem is that the cooling effect doesn't seem to last. The pillows have a 3.9-star rating from 272 ratings, and 20% of shoppers gave them one or two stars. Several one-star reviewers say the cover feels cool for only a few minutes before warming up, and another calls them clumpy and unsupportive.

Pillows are a nightly purchase you'll feel every morning, so it may be worth spending a bit more on a better-reviewed option rather than replacing these in a few months.

Member's Mark Organic Lightly Breaded Chicken Tenders

Courtesy of Sam's Club breaded chicken tenders

Price: $13.87

These frozen tenders sound like a smart, healthier shortcut for busy weeknights. The 2-pound bag features organic chicken breast meat with a light breading, 15 grams of protein per serving, and no antibiotics, artificial ingredients, or preservatives. They're also gluten-free.

But the organic label comes at a cost — about $6.93 a pound — and the reviews don't back up the premium. The tenders have a 3.8-star rating from 161 ratings, and nearly a quarter of reviewers gave them one or two stars.

If you're paying extra for organic, you want your family to actually eat them. Buying organic chicken breasts and breading them yourself takes only a few extra minutes and lets you season them exactly how your family likes.

Bottom line

Eduardo Barraza/Adobe Sam’s Club wholesale retail warehouse

Bulk buys and in-club bakery treats can be tempting, but low ratings, freezer-hogging multipacks, and oversized tubs that spoil before you finish them can quietly drain your budget. Skipping these duds, buying only what you'll actually use, and comparing prices before you hit the club can also help you save money on groceries.
