Fruit picker

Hourly rate: up to $20 per hour

Why it's great for retirees: Love that yearly orchard visit? Check if your local spot is looking for pickers for apples (or other farms with fruit crops, such as strawberries). It's a great way to stay connected to the land and stay active while earning some extra money on the side.

Companies hiring: Check the website Pickingjobs, which is connected to farms across the country and can give you a better idea of where and when you'll find seasonal jobs available.

Grocery shoppers

Weekly rate: $300 — $500 (part-time)

Why it's great for retirees: Having groceries delivered is a fairly new concept to most of the country, and retirees are well-positioned to find it easy work since they've spent most of their lives grocery shopping for themselves.

Companies hiring: Instacart is the leading app for grocery deliveries, but grocery chains such as Wegmans also hire store shoppers directly, as does Amazon.

Remote customer service

Hourly rate: up to $20 per hour

Why it's great for retirees: Those of retirement age often don't mind talking on the phone, and in fact can prefer it over text messaging. Corporations are moving away from the call center model and instead offering it as remote work, allowing the job to be done from home while never requiring you to leave your pajamas or yoga pants.

Companies hiring: There is no shortage of job postings seeking remote customer service specialists, and those willing to work on-site can also look to local call centers still in operation, which tend to pay slightly higher rates.

Gift wrapper

Hourly rate: up to $20 per hour

Why it's great for retirees: The holidays mean presents, and those gifts aren't going to wrap themselves. If wrapping presents with an eye for design and aesthetics is in your wheelhouse, this can be a relaxing way to earn some extra money to supplement your retirement budget.

Companies hiring: Shopping centers, malls, and large department store chains often hire seasonal help just to wrap gifts. Places such as Amazon also hire gift wrappers to work in their warehouse.

Drivers

Hourly rate: up to $28 per hour

Why it's great for retirees: Many driving jobs have very low physical demands, as much of the time is spent sitting behind the wheel. Most driving jobs don't require a CDL, and drivers can listen to music, audiobooks, or podcasts to stay entertained on the road. This is great for introverts who shudder at the thought of customer service jobs.

Companies hiring: Package delivery through UPS, Amazon, and others increases during the holidays, and so does hiring. Food delivery is also an option, either directly through restaurants such as Papa John's or through third-party delivery services, like Uber Eats or DoorDash, where you can set your own hours.

National and state parks

Hourly rate: up to $25 per hour

Why it's great for retirees: You have the RV and want to travel, but finances are tight. Seasonal work in parks, lodges, and other travel destinations can solve both problems. Many travel destinations hire seasonal workers. Fall is a good time to apply for the spring and summer seasons. Keep an eye out for places that include RV spaces with full hook-ups as part of the compensation package.

Companies hiring: Places such as Mount Rushmore National Park and Glacier National Park Lodges hire a variety of different workers for the season, and also provide RV parking so you can live and work at exciting travel destinations without denting your retirement savings.

Retail associate at high-end stores

Hourly rate: up to $20 per hour

Why it's great for retirees: Retail positions in upscale stores often offer higher wages and a pleasant working environment. These roles are typically part-time and involve customer service without heavy lifting.

Companies hiring: Companies like Swarovski, Banana Republic, Ralph Lauren, as well as big retailers like Macy's, hire seasonal associates during the holiday season.

Tutoring

Hourly rate: up to $60 per hour (according to TutorCruncher)

Why it's great for retirees: Retirees with a background in education or fluency in a second language can keep their minds sharp and pass on knowledge to the younger generations. Parents may hire personal tutors during the summer to keep their kids engaged during their vacation time.

Companies hiring: Variables such as location, subject, and student age can all impact the pay rate for private tutors. However, online sites like Wyzant and Tutor.com can help connect retirees with tutoring work. Many sites also allow workers to set their own rates, and parents can then choose the tutor that is best for their personal situation.

Nanny

Hourly rate: up to $23 per hour (according to UrbanSitter)

Why it's great for retirees: Retirees who love kids can consider working as a nanny and help raise other children, especially during summer and the holiday season when kids are out of school.

Companies hiring: Online sites such as Care.com allow nannies and babysitters to post profiles that parents can peruse for the right match with their children, and many sites allow you to set your own rates.

Theater usher

Hourly rate: up to $20 hourly

Why it's great for retirees: Ushers typically work evenings, making it a flexible option for retirees. The job involves minimal physical exertion and offers a social environment. Movie theaters get busier during the holidays because families have time off, studios release blockbusters, and people seek indoor entertainment.

Companies hiring: Many local theaters and performing arts centers hire seasonal ushers. AMC, Regal, and Cinemark often employ seasonal staff.

Bottom line

It's tough out there for retirees who planned for a stress-free retirement, but are now finding economic pressures outside of their control forcing them back to work. Picking up seasonal jobs can be a low-stress way to keep money flowing into your bank account.

With inflation rates still trending up (the latest CPI showing 2.9% as of August 2025), consider incorporating a part-time seasonal job into your retirement plan to guarantee you have enough to pay for all your bills.
