Vanguard's VTI, VXUS, BND, and VNQ together cover U.S. stocks, international equities, bonds, and real estate at a blended expense ratio under 0.10%. VTI alone tracks more than 3,500 stocks at 0.03%, and adding VXUS brings the combined count past 12,000 names across every investable market.
Building financial fitness for retirement with four funds and no active manager sounds almost too simple, but the one condition is rebalancing over time, gradually shifting from equity-heavy allocations toward bonds and real estate as retirement nears, since BND's 30-day SEC yield of 5.1% offers a passive income anchor that stocks alone do not provide.

VTI and VXUS combine more than 12,000 stocks across every investable market for 0.04%
VTI holds more than 3,500 U.S. stocks at an expense ratio of 0.03%, with top holdings in Nvidia at 7.14%, Apple at 6.63%, and Microsoft at 5.20%, Motley Fool showed. The exchange-traded fund (ETF) manages $2.30 trillion in assets, making it one of the largest investment vehicles in the world.
VXUS adds more than 8,900 international stocks at 0.05% with no U.S. overlap, covering developed and emerging markets through names like TSMC, Tencent, and ASML, Motley Fool documented. The pairing gives a retirement portfolio exposure to virtually every publicly traded company on earth for a combined annual cost of roughly $4 on a $10,000 balance.
BND yields 5.1% across more than 10,000 bonds at an annual cost of 0.03%
BND holds more than 10,000 U.S. investment-grade bonds, with roughly two-thirds in Treasuries and agency mortgage-backed securities, Motley Fool showed. The fund's 30-day SEC yield of 5.1% provides steady income without requiring a retiree to sell shares, a distinction from any stock-only portfolio.
Christine Benz, director of personal finance at Morningstar, said "the main benefit from rebalancing comes in the realm of volatility reduction" and described rebalancing as "a natural way to source cash flows and take risk out of the portfolio on an ongoing basis," Morningstar showed. The guidance underscores why shifting toward BND as retirement approaches matters more than chasing the highest-returning fund.
A decade of returns shows why the stock-bond shift matters as retirement nears
VTI delivered a 634% total return over the past ten years with dividends reinvested, compared with 165% for VXUS, 75% for VNQ, and 15% for BND, Motley Fool showed. The gap explains why younger investors load up on VTI but also why staying there too long exposes a retirement portfolio to a crash right when withdrawals begin.
- VNQ holds more than 160 real estate investment trusts (REITs) and real estate companies, with a trailing yield of 3.58% and heavy exposure to telecom towers, logistics, data centers, and retail.
- BND tracks the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index across more than 11,000 securities, with a 30-day median bid-ask spread of 0.01%.
- Vanguard founder John Bogle captured the philosophy behind all four funds with the phrase "just buy the haystack," arguing most active managers fall short of the index over time.
The performance gap between VTI's 634% and BND's 15% over a decade makes the rebalancing decision feel counterintuitive, because it means trimming the winner and adding to the laggard. For a retiree drawing income, though, the shift replaces price-dependent gains with a predictable yield that arrives regardless of what the stock market does on any given day.
A 60/40 portfolio from a decade ago may have drifted to 80/20 without a single new trade
Benz noted that a portfolio set at 60% stocks and 40% bonds ten years ago could sit at roughly 80% stocks and 20% bonds after a decade of equity gains, Morningstar showed. The drift happens silently, and a retiree who never rebalanced may carry twice the equity risk they originally chose.
Benz suggested that a divergence of five percentage points in any major asset class is a signal to rebalance, with ten points being a clear trigger, and recommended checking exposures at least once a year, Morningstar reported. The review takes minutes, and the rebalancing itself involves selling a slice of VTI or VXUS and directing the proceeds into BND or VNQ to bring the mix back to target.
Rebalancing inside a tax-sheltered account avoids triggering capital gains
Benz recommended focusing rebalancing efforts on tax-sheltered accounts, including traditional and Roth individual retirement accounts (IRAs), where sales do not trigger a capital gains event, Morningstar showed. A retiree holding these four ETFs inside a 401(k) or IRA rebalances without tax friction, preserving more of the portfolio's value.
For taxable accounts, Benz suggested directing new contributions toward underweight positions and using losing positions to offset gains from trimming winners, Morningstar documented. The tax-aware approach lets the strategy work across all account types without eroding returns to Uncle Sam each time you adjust the mix.
The strategy works only when the rebalancing happens, and most investors skip it
VNQ's real estate exposure is described as "generally insulated from inflation over the long term," making it a natural complement to BND's fixed-income yield in a retirement portfolio, Motley Fool showed.
The four-fund structure covers every major asset class, but the condition that holds it together is the discipline to shift from growth toward income before you need the income to live on.
Bottom line
A 50/50 split between VTI and VXUS costs roughly $4 a year in fees on a $10,000 balance, and adding BND and VNQ raises the blended cost only marginally. Nearly every dollar stays invested and working toward either growth or income rather than paying a fund manager to pick stocks.
The simplest way to start investing for retirement may involve fewer holdings than most people expect, and these four funds cover more of the market than a shelf of actively managed alternatives at a fraction of the cost. The one condition, rebalancing toward income as the timeline shortens, is the only active decision the strategy requires.
