Those vintage plates you pull out once a year for the holidays or have hanging out in the back of your dining room display cabinet could actually be worth a small fortune. For some collectors, vintage dinnerware is worth big bucks on the resale market, either because the items are handmade, were released as a special edition, or are considered extremely rare.

Check your cabinets for these 10 types of vintage plates that could help you make extra money.

Japanese Kutani plates

The value of pottery and porcelain famously made in what was once known as the Kutani area in Japan depends on many factors, like the age and designs featured on the dinnerware.

Centuries-old Kutani plates have been known to sell for thousands, and one featuring blue figures thought to be from the 17th century is currently listed on eBay for almost $1,400.

Tiffany & Co. plates

Tiffany & Co. is known for making stunning, luxury jewelry and other items, and you could be sitting on a small fortune if you happen to have some highly sought-after dining ware, too.

While Tiffany did make gold and silver plates, which have garnered thousands at auction, their bone China dinnerware often sells for big bucks as well (and is more common). A holiday-themed dinner plate adorned with red ribbon and holly, for example, is currently listed on eBay for $339.

Chinese Kangxi plates

Collectors have been known to shell out money for dinnerware created during China's Kangxi period, which lasted from 1661 to 1722 and was something of a renaissance period for the country's porcelain production.

A dish featuring the era's famed blue designs is currently listed on eBay for nearly $1,000, but these antique plates in good condition have also sold for much more.

Meissen plates

Vintage plates by German manufacturer Meissen could be worth quite a lot depending on age, artistry/pattern, and, of course, condition. A beautiful plate from the 1930s featuring gold gilding and striking hand-painted flowers is currently listed on eBay for $900.

If you believe you have a Meissen, look for their signature two-swords stamp on the back of the plate.

Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica plates

Flora Danica has been in business creating intricate dishware with floral and botanical designs since the 1700s. Collectors are known to invest a significant amount of money for older pieces, even those that do not come in sets. A 9-inch lunch plate with a gold trim and blue pastel floral design, which dates back to the 19th century, for example, is currently listed for nearly $900 on eBay.

Sèvres plates

Any vintage plate you have from French manufacturer Sèvres could be worth some serious cash, but some are more valuable than others. A 1771 antique plate featuring a cherub and nymph is currently listed on eBay for nearly $400.

Look for the Sèvres marking on the back to authenticate any potential plates you may have.

Minton dinner plates

Minton plates are no longer produced and could garner quite a bit on the resale market, particularly for unique printings or full sets from the historic British manufacturer.

A set of six antique plates with stunning turquoise and gold trim is currently listed on eBay for $1,125. Even with slight imperfections, Milton sets may be worth serious cash.

Moorcroft pottery plates

Plates created by UK designer Moorcroft, particularly those from the early 20th century, are highly desirable on the resale market.

The plates often feature hibiscus, pomegranate, and other delicate patterns. Currently, a 1925 plate featuring a blue and green "moonlit" tree design is listed on eBay for nearly $900.

Spode plates

While you can still purchase Spode plates from the company today, some collections, particularly their popular holiday-themed and "Blue Italian" items, tend to maintain value on the resale market. If you're hoping to unload some porcelain plates for quick cash, Spode sets and specialty plates are regularly listed for hundreds on eBay.

Lenox Fountain pattern plates

Though Lenox has been in business for more than 100 years, and you can still purchase directly from the seller today, some vintage patterns and products could be worth serious cash at auction.

Lenox's Fountain collection is particularly valuable. Created in the first half of the 20th century, the plates, which are trimmed in blue and feature a slight fountain design at the center, may sell for thousands if you have a set. Even a single dinner plate is currently listed on eBay for nearly $120.

Bottom line

Many people enjoy collecting rare and valuable porcelain as a hobby, an investment, or a bit of both. You may be surprised at the value you could find browsing the dining ware shelves at your local thrift store and how some finds may put extra cash in your pocket.

However, before you invest, look for the marks of these sought-after designers and keep in mind that some more recent products may not have much additional value.
