With services like Spotify and Apple Music, listening to your favorite artists is easier than ever before, and many assume that physical media no longer holds much value. For the large majority of CDs, cassettes, and even vinyl, that's true. Yet some rarities, including 8-track tapes of classic albums from the '70s and '80s, have been known to net paydays big enough to help pay for your rent and other bills.

Sinatra Jobim, Frank Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim
Estimated market value: $3,500
Perhaps the most valuable 8-track these days is an extremely rare collaboration album featuring Frank Sinatra and composer/musician Antonio Carlos Jobim. The album was reportedly never released on vinyl, and only a few thousand 8-tracks were made in 1969. Legend says that most of those were destroyed as well.
According to ValueYourMusic, an online price guide, the record sale for one of these rarities sold back in 2019 was $4,200. Another copy is currently available on eBay for about $3,500.
The Joshua Tree, U2
Estimated market value: $1,000
U2's 1987 album "The Joshua Tree" is packed with classics like "Where The Streets Have No Name" and "With Or Without You." It is often ranked as the band's best album, and original 8-tracks have been known to sell for serious cash on the resale market.
Currently, a tape in working condition is attracting plenty of eyes on eBay with a nearly $1,000 price tag.
True Blue, Madonna
Estimated market value: $200
Madonna's 1986 album "True Blue" features massive hits like "Papa Don't Preach" and "Open Your Heart." Well-kept versions of the 8-track typically sell for between $50 and $150, but there are some outliers worth more. Recently, a factory-sealed copy of the tape sold for more than $200 on eBay, for example.

Bad, Michael Jackson

If you happen to have any of the King of Pop's 8-tracks lying around, you could be looking at a payout of at least a few hundred dollars, though 1987's "Bad" is likely to yield the most.
Several sealed versions of the 8-track, which include classics like "Smooth Criminal" and "The Way You Make Me Feel," have sold for more than $300 in recent years.
Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd

The 8-track of Pink Floyd's 1973 album "Dark Side of the Moon" is extremely valuable for collectors if kept in excellent condition or if it has a little notch in the upper right corner, which indicates it is quadraphonic and offers more of a surround sound listening experience.
ValueYourMusic puts the record for a quadraphonic 8-track at $1,500, and there is currently a factory-sealed version attracting much attention on eBay with a nearly $500 asking price.
1999, Prince

Prince's top albums have been known to sell for a few hundred dollars to 8-track collectors.
The 1982 classic "1999" is a highly sought-after collectible, with a factory-sealed version recently selling on eBay for about $350. "Purple Rain" is also valuable when kept in good condition.
KISS (self-titled)
Estimated market value: $250
In 1974, shock-rock legends KISS released their self-titled debut album, a record that super-fans are often willing to shell out serious cash for in its many different forms.
One factory-sealed version of the 8-track sold for $1,200, according to ValueYourMusic, and well-kept versions have sold for around $250 on eBay.
Loaded, The Velvet Underground
Estimated market value: $200
It's worth it to check out the going rates for any of the Velvet Underground's 8-tracks on the resale market, as several have been known to attract attention, and big paydays, from fans.
It's rare to find "Loaded," released in 1970, in 8-track form, and copies kept in good condition have been known to sell for $200 or more.
What's Going On, Marvin Gaye
Estimated market value: $50
Though 8-track versions of Marvin Gaye's 1971 album "What's Going On" are rare, used versions of the tapes are typically listed for around $50 or less on sites like eBay.
A factory sealed version is another story, with one 8-track from the Motown legend selling in 2020 for $1,300, according to ValueYourMusic.

Metal heads and collectors have been known to shell out serious cash for Iron Maiden classics, and that includes the 8-track of the 1981 album "Killers." One sold for a record $500 back in 2022, and another is attracting plenty of attention on eBay with an asking price of $350.

Though most 8-tracks are considered obsolete today and are not worth much, a few rarities could be your key if you want to get ahead financially.
