Phish, Phish

This off-label 1987 tape was self-published by the band, though not all of the songs feature every eventual member of Phish. Instead, some versions of the tape include recordings done by just the lead singer and guitarist, Trey Anastasio, or bassist Mike Gordon. While there are no copies of the tape currently for sale on the music sales site Discogs, a copy once sold for $1,250.

The Smashing Pumpkins, The Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins didn't become a household name until the 1990s, but the band released around 500 copies of their self-titled, off-label cassette tape in 1989. The insert cards came in a variety of colors, and the A- and B-side identifying labels were handwritten by members of the band.

While the median price for the tape is $467,65 on Discogs, one did sell for more than twice that price at $1,200.

The Madonna Collection, Madonna

This four-box cassette-tape set was sold only in the Philippines in 1987. It included all four Madonna albums released between 1984 and 1987, and each was sold in a VHS-style case with custom inlays. According to buyer comments, some versions of the case were transparent black while some were completely opaque.

The last time Discogs sold a copy of The Madonna Collection was in 2015. At the high end, a copy went for $1,500, though some sold for as little as $200.

United Diaries 32-tape box set

The United Diaries label was formed in the late 1970s specifically to release Nurse With Wound's first industrial LP. Less than ten years later, Nurse With Wound band member Steven Stapleton ended up taking over the label, then releasing every one of the 32 cassette tapes in a massive box set in 1987.

Some of the tapes include remixed or extended tracks recorded specifically for the box set compilation, which came packaged in a custom black case. A version of the set was sold for $2,300 on Discogs.

Opération Beurre de Pinottes soundtrack

This very strange children's film from 1985 is a québecois production that translates to "The Peanut Butter Solution" and features two singles from Canadian star Céline Dion. Discogs once sold the cassette tape recording of the original soundtrack for $1,500.

On a Friday, On a Friday

"On a Friday" was the name of the band that became "Radiohead" once it was picked up by a talent scout and signed a multi-album contract. On a Friday also had three saxophone players who abandoned the project before the Radiohead days. Just eight people report owning the 1986, 11-track tape on Discogs, one of which sold for a tidy $1,882.35 profit.

No Life 'Til Leather, Metallica

Metallica put out this one-sided, seven-track demo tape in 1982. Versions of most of these early tracks would end up on the band's first official release, the album Kill 'Em All, which was released in 1983. While run-of-the-mill copies can sell for as little as $20, a collector did pay $1,117.65 for a high-quality copy on Discogs.

Licensed to Ill, Beastie Boys

The Beastie Boys started as a punk band, transitioned into hip hop and rap, and ended up as a mix of all three. Their first album, Licensed to Ill, came out in 1986, and a sealed cassette tape of the album was sold for $535 on eBay this year. Another first-pressing copy went for $271, though most copies sell for $100 or less, depending on quality.

24 Hours, Throbbing Gristle

This 26-cassette-tape set includes 23 live recordings of industrial band Throbbing Gristle plus three studio tapes and interviews. Only 50 copies of the set were released in 1980, and since there are so few copies, each one has a hand-made collage, signed info card, and color photographs.

Ultimately, the label likely released 200 or so copies after the initial run of 50, though the second printing of 150 lacked the personal touches of the first batch. The last copy on Discogs was sold in 2024 at a price of $2,200.
