5 Popular Beach Getaways That Just Aren’t Worth It Anymore

A week at the beach used to be the simplest vacation on the board. Now it takes a spreadsheet. Travel prices in May 2026 ran 7.8% higher than a year earlier, more than double the overall inflation rate, and average airline fares jumped 26.7% compared with the year before.

Deloitte found that just 45% of Americans planned a summer vacation with paid lodging, the lowest share in six years, while those who did go expected to spend an average of $4,069 on their longest trip, up 17%.

Add social-media crowds to that math and some famous shorelines stop making sense. If you want to save money on travel without giving up sand, it helps to know which big names have quietly stopped delivering.

Here are five, along with where to go instead.

Tulum, Mexico

Tulum's beach-club era priced itself right out of business. Residents say tourists left because the town kept charging exorbitant prices across transportation, lodging, and food. Hotel occupancy averaged 66.18% in the first half of 2026, down from 74.32% a year earlier, a much steeper slide than Cancún or Playa del Carmen posted. Then there's the seaweed. Mexico reported 96,151 tonnes of sargassum collected in Quintana Roo by July 30, 2026, already more than all of 2025.

Better swap: Isla Mujeres. Playa Norte and the northern Cancun Hotel Zone tend to stay clearer, while Tulum and Akumal face the open Caribbean and get hit hardest.

Maui, Hawaii

Maui is still stunning. It's also the priciest place to sleep in an already pricey state. Average hotel rates run north of $500 a night versus roughly $285 to $290 on Oahu. Hawaii's Green Fee took effect January 1, 2026, raising the state lodging tax to 11%, and once you stack the county surcharge and the general excise tax, the total on a visitor stay lands close to 19%. Layer on a resort fee and parking, and your $500 room is well past $650 before dinner.

Better swap: Oahu, or the Big Island's east side. Hilo is consistently the most affordable base, with budget rooms starting around $100 to $130 a night.

South Beach, Miami

The Art Deco backdrop hasn't changed, but visiting in high season means reading a rulebook first. Miami Beach eased some spring break restrictions for 2026 while keeping a heavy law enforcement presence, and municipal garages in the Art Deco District now carry flat rates ranging from $40 to $100. Park badly and the nonresident towing rate is $516, double the normal rate, plus a $30 administrative fee. It isn't unsafe. It's just costly and a little joyless for a day at the ocean.

Better swap: Hollywood Beach, about 20 minutes north, where Broadwalk delivers beachy vibes without Miami's nonstop energy.

Canggu and Seminyak, Bali

Bali drew nearly seven million international visitors in 2025, and more than 16 million total arrivals, and most of them funnel into the same southern strip, where peak-hour traffic in Canggu and Seminyak can drop to little more than walking pace, and drainage systems struggle during heavy rain. Travel times from the airport to Canggu can now exceed 90 minutes at peak hours. Indonesia has also stepped up enforcement of its 150,000 rupiah tourist levy, about $10, for every international visitor.

Better swap: head north. Areas like Lovina and the mountainous interior stay comparatively quiet and receive a fraction of the traffic.

Positano, Italy

Positano photographs better than it lives. Visitors arrive dreaming of crystalline beaches and colorful villages, then meet endless traffic, Positano lodging averaging roughly €500 a day, meals that can run €150 per person, and porters charging €15 to carry luggage up 100 stairs. Driving is its own project. The SS163 coastal road between Vietri sul Mare and Positano runs an alternating license plate system that limits which cars can circulate on which days.

Better swap: base yourself down the coast. Praiano, Maiori, Minori, and Cetara offer 30% to 50% lower costs for equivalent quality, and the ferry gets you in for the day.

Bottom line

A famous beach earns your money when the full price matches the actual experience, so price the whole stay instead of the nightly rate. Taxes, resort fees, and parking can add 25% or more. Then check what the season really looks like on the ground, whether that's a live sargassum tracker or a quick news search for new crowd rules. If the honest verdict is "great, as long as you plan around it," the place is coasting on its reputation.

Here's a detail that might change how you shop. Hotel prices in July 2026 sat only 2.6% above the same time last year, while airfares rose in every month of 2026 and climbed 23.4% from August of 2026. Your flight is the budget problem, not your room. Some of the easy ways to travel more this year come down to picking a coast you can fly to cheaply, then spending the difference on a better place to stay once you land.
