Our view

There are enough travel credit cards to choose from that you could easily spend days researching just the most beginner-friendly options, but your choice might ultimately come down to a couple of cards. Two names you'll see often in this space are the Discover it® Miles (Rates and fees) and Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card. The Discover it® Miles card has no annual fee and a simple rewards structure, while the Capital One Venture card offers more travel perks and the potential for higher annual rewards. The latter is objectively better, but only if you're the target cardholder.

Ultimately, the Capital One Venture's high reward rate, flexible redemption options, and numerous travel benefits make it better for frequent travelers who want to maximize their rewards. But the Discover it Miles is still a solid option for occasional travelers, especially if you've looked around enough to know that welcome bonuses are the norm. Our comparison of these two travel credit cards can help you choose the better one for your lifestyle, and avoid a card that'll drag you down.

When to go with the Discover it Miles

  • You don't want to pay an annual fee
  • You want to take advantage of intro APR offers
  • You plan to do serious spending in the first year

You don't want to pay an annual fee

The Discover it Miles credit card has a $0 annual fee, which means you could maximize your rewards. In contrast, the Capital One Venture card's $95 annual fee can mean some of the rewards you earn will essentially go toward offsetting its cost.

If you're an occasional traveler (think once a year or less) and want a simple, $0-annual-fee card, the Discover it Miles is the better choice. You can assess your need for a more mid-range card, like the Venture Rewards, later on if you start traveling more.

You want to take advantage of introductory APR offers

Like many other Discover credit cards, the Discover it Miles offers an intro APR on purchases and balance transfers.

  • Intro APR on purchases: 0% intro APR for 15 months on purchases (then 17.49% - 26.49% Variable)
  • Intro APR on balance transfers: 0% intro APR for 15 months on balance transfers (then 17.49% - 26.49% Variable) (3% intro balance transfer fee, up to 5% fee on future balance transfers (see terms)*).

The Capital One Venture Rewards doesn't offer intro APRs, so you'll need to pay off your balance in full to avoid accruing interest. If you're looking to pay off a big purchase over time or pay down debt with a balance transfer, choose the Discover it Miles.

You plan to do serious spending in the first year

One of the biggest draws of the Discover it Miles credit card is the unlimited first-year match. However many miles you earn in your first year as a cardmember, Discover will match them mile-for-mile at the end of your first year. This is in place of a traditional fixed welcome bonus, so whether you make the most of it depends entirely on how much you spend in that first year.

So, if you earn 36,000 miles in your first year, Discover will match you with another 36,000 miles. That's an extra $360 you can put toward travel or a statement credit. This has the potential to be more rewarding than the Capital One Venture offer, but the keyword is potential.

When to go with the Capital One Venture

  • You travel often
  • You want protection and insurance benefits
  • You want to earn more miles with the option to transfer

You travel often

The Capital One Venture is the better option for frequent travelers, or people who travel at least twice a year or so. You'll get up to a $120 credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck once every four years, Hertz Five Star status2, and a variety of travel protections.

You want protection and insurance benefits

The Discover it Miles card provides very few purchase protections. With the Capital One Venture, you get the following protection and insurance benefits:

  • Auto rental collision damage waiver
  • Travel accident insurance
  • Extended warranty, which typically includes appliances, TVs, and more
  • 24-hour travel assistance services3

These additional benefits can give you extra peace of mind, both at home and while traveling, that the Discover it Miles card can't provide.

You want to earn more miles with the option to transfer

The Capital One Venture lets you earn 2 miles per dollar on every purchase, every day, 5 miles per dollar on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and 5 miles per dollar on Capital One Entertainment purchases. If you travel frequently, especially if you ever use Capital One Travel to book stays and rental cars, you'll see a much higher return than you would with the Discover it Miles. Even non-travel purchases earn a higher rate, since the Discover it Miles offers the same base earning rate on everything.

You can also transfer your miles to several hotel and travel partners. You'll need at least 1,000 miles to transfer. Many of Capital One's transfer partners allow you to transfer miles at a 1:1 ratio, while a few (like EVA Air and JetBlue) offer less favorable conversion rates.

Where both cards excel

Both the Discover it Miles and the Capital One Venture share these features:

  • No foreign transaction fees: Neither card charges you an extra fee for making purchases overseas, which is a huge benefit if you travel abroad or even just spend with foreign merchants.
  • Multiple redemption options: Both cards let you redeem miles for travel, statement credits, and cash back.
  • Card security: Both the Discover it Miles and Capital One Venture have $0 fraud liability and security alerts, helping you keep your money safe at home and while traveling.

FAQs

What is the difference between Discover it® Miles and Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card?

The Discover it Miles card has no annual fee and earns a flat 1.5X miles on all eligible purchases. The Capital One Venture has a $95 annual fee but earns 5 miles per dollar on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and 2 miles per dollar on every purchase, every day.

Is the Capital One Venture card good for travel rewards?

Yes, it's an excellent card for earning straightforward travel rewards. With its simple rate, you can earn 2 miles per dollar on every purchase, every day, 5 miles per dollar on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and 5 miles per dollar on Capital One Entertainment purchases. Travel redemptions include covering past travel purchases, booking travel through Capital One Travel, and transferring rewards to travel partners.

What is the value of Capital One miles?

Capital One miles are typically worth one cent per mile. For example, 10,000 Capital One miles are worth $100 for some of the most common redemptions, such as covering past travel purchases and booking travel through Capital One Travel. Transferring your miles to a hotel or airline partner can potentially get outsized value.

Bottom line

We recommend the Capital One Venture Rewards over the Discover it Miles for frequent travelers, as it has more earning potential and additional travel benefits. However, the Discover it Miles is a solid option if you prefer a $0 annual fee and intro APR offers. Ultimately, your spending habits, financial goals, and travel plans will influence the decision between these cards.
