Social Security payments are an essential component of your monthly budget and stretch your retirement income, so it’s important to know exactly what day of the month you can count on getting your benefit.

While payment dates stay fairly consistent, June’s national holiday — Juneteenth, which takes place on the third Wednesday of June each year — shifts this month’s payment for some beneficiaries.

Keep reading to learn when you can expect to receive your Social Security benefit this month.

The ultra-rich have also been investing in art from big names like Picasso and Bansky for centuries. And it's for a good reason: Contemporary art prices have outpaced the S&P 500 by 136% over the last 27 years.

A new company called Masterworks is now allowing everyday investors to get in on this type of previously-exclusive investment. You can buy a small slice of $1-$30 million paintings from iconic artists, all without needing any art expertise.

If you have at least $10K to invest and are ready to explore diversifying beyond stocks and bonds, see what Masterworks has on offer. (Hurry, they often sell out!)

When to expect your June Social Security payment

For the most part, Social Security payment dates are based on which day of the month you were born. Most months, that schedule breaks down as follows:

  • If you were born between the 1st and 10th day of your birth month, you’ll receive your benefits on the second Wednesday of the month.
  • If you were born between the 11th and 20th day of your birth month, you’ll receive your benefits on the third Wednesday of the month.
  • If you were born between the 21st and 31st day of your birth month, you’ll receive your benefits on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

If a payment date falls on a federal holiday, as does the third Wednesday in June, your payment will be scheduled for the weekday just before the holiday. For the month of June, then, you can anticipate the following payment dates:

  • Wednesday, June 12, for those born between the 1st and 10th.
  • Tuesday, June 18, for those born between the 11th and 20th.
  • Wednesday, June 26, for those born between the 21st and 31st.

As an example, let’s say you were born on September 15th, 1955. Typically, you’d be paid the third Wednesday of the month, but because of the federal holiday, you’ll receive your June payment this year on Tuesday, June 18th, 2024.

When to expect your June Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment

Supplemental Security Income is a different type of benefit paid to individuals with extremely limited income and resources. You may also qualify for SSI based on disability, blindness, or age (usually if you’re 65 and older).

If you receive SSI benefits based on disability, blindness, or age, you’ll be paid on the first of the month.

However, since June 1st falls on a Saturday this year, your payment will go out on Friday, May 31st — which means you’ll receive two payments for the month of May since your first payment would have gone out on May 1st.

If you receive both SSI benefits and Social Security benefits, you’ll receive your Social Security payment on the third of the month, which falls on a Monday this year.

If you’re a member of one of the following groups of beneficiaries, you’ll also receive Social Security benefits on the third day of the month:

  • Individuals who applied for benefits before May 1, 1997
  • Individuals who live out of the country
  • Individuals who are enrolled in their state’s Medicare Savings Programs

These Social Security beneficiaries can expect to receive their Social Security payment on Monday, June 3, 2024.

What happens if you don’t receive your payment by the scheduled date?

Typically, your payment should be deposited without a hitch on the scheduled date — but if it isn’t, it’s important not to panic. The Social Security Administration asks that you wait three business days before getting in touch about a missed payment.

It could be that a state holiday, bank holiday, or other administrative issue delayed your payment by a few days.

If it’s been a few days and you still haven’t received your benefit check, contact your bank. Find out if the payment has been scheduled and if the funds are in transit but haven’t been deposited.

You should also try checking your personal information on your online SSA account. Have you moved or changed banks recently? If so, failing to report the change to the SSA on time could explain why your payment is still in transit.

Finally, if your bank doesn’t report a scheduled payment and doesn’t have any insight into why you haven’t gotten your payment, it’s time to get in touch with the SSA.

You can call the administration toll-free at 1-800-772-1213 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time. Individuals who use TTY equipment can call the administration’s TTY number: 1-800-325-0778.

Alternatively, look up your nearest SSA field office to get local assistance.
