Cruising keeps getting more popular, and the ports are feeling it. Nassau's cruise terminal is on track for a record season, with more than 3,200 ship arrivals scheduled from 2026 through 2028. More ships mean bigger crowds on shore and more pressure to book whatever excursions your cruise line is pitching.

The problem is that the activity you book through the ship often costs 30% to 50% more than the identical activity booked on your own. If you want to save money on travel, your port days are a great place to start. Here are the excursions that usually don't give you enough bang for your buck.

Beach club packages in Cozumel

Cruise line excursion packages in Cozumel typically run $70 to $150 per person. That's a lot to spend when all you really want is a chair, some sun, and a cold drink.

At Paradise Beach, one of the island's most popular beach clubs, the à la carte option costs a $15 entry fee plus a $10 minimum food and drink purchase per person, though it isn't available on sold-out days. A standard taxi from the pier costs about $14 or $15 each way, and van taxis that fit up to eight people run $30 each way. Splitting a van with your group keeps transportation cheap. Just know that the club can get busy when several ships are in port, which can limit availability, so arriving early is worth it.

Mendenhall Glacier tours in Juneau

Mendenhall Glacier is on nearly every Alaska cruiser's list, but you don't need a pricey ship tour to see it. One traveler found the ship's glacier excursion would have cost just over $200, mostly for a bus ride and a hike, and saved over $100 by going independently.

The Blue Bus glacier shuttle costs $79, including the Forest Service fee, while the city bus costs $2 but leaves you with a 1.5-mile walk. Don't wait until the last minute, though. Federal permit cuts in 2026 ended hop-on, hop-off glacier shuttles, so you'll need to reserve a time slot in advance. Shuttles typically give you two hours at the glacier, which is enough to see the main viewpoint and walk to Nugget Falls without rushing.

Big-group stingray city trips in Grand Cayman

Stingray City is a bucket-list experience, but the ship's version is usually the most expensive way to do it. As of 2026, cruise line excursions that include Stingray City often cost about $85 to $115 per adult, while independent local operators may charge roughly $40 to $90. For example, Captain Marvin's offers a stingray and starfish combo tour for $65 per person on early morning departures before the crowds.

Those crowds are a real issue. Cruise groups of 30 to 50 people per boat have made the sandbar especially congested from mid-morning to early afternoon. Traveling with a big group? A $900 private charter split among 10 adults works out to $90 each, which is competitive with the ship's price for a far better experience.

Guided shopping excursions

Shopping tours and onboard port talks can feel like insider tips, but they aren't exactly neutral. Stores promoted during onboard shopping seminars pay cruise lines a commission for steering passengers their way. If you walk a couple of blocks away from the pier, non-preferred stores selling similar quality items often have better prices because they have to compete for shoppers.

Skip the guided outing and do a little homework instead. Independent port guides are a better bet than the shopping guides your ship hands out, and grocery stores are great for local candies and snacks at lower prices than the airport. If you're already booked on a sightseeing tour, most include free time for shopping, so there's no need to pay for a separate trip.

Nassau sightseeing tours

Nassau is one of the easiest Caribbean ports to explore independently, so a paid city tour is often money you don't need to spend. The Queen's Staircase and Fort Fincastle are free and about a 15-minute walk from the port. Junkanoo Beach is also free, and you can walk there from the ship in under 15 minutes with no taxi needed.

Want a little more comfort? Bahama Bay Pool Club sits just a two-minute walk from the port, and a day pass booked online runs about $35 to $50 per person. Add lunch and a stroll past the historic sights, and a full Nassau day can come in around $60 to $80 per person, which is well below most cruise line excursions.

Atlantis Aquaventure on a short port day

Atlantis is a blast, but it's a tough sell when your ship is only in Nassau for part of the day. As of March 2026, day passes start at $195 per adult and $95 for kids ages 4 to 12, and they often hit $250 or more during peak weeks. Once you add pricey food, a locker, and a taxi from the port, the real cost for a couple lands near $540.

Time eats into the value too. If you only have four to five hours on the island, you'll also need to account for 10 to 20 minutes of transit each way. For families of four, a room at Comfort Suites Paradise Island may cost less than four day passes, since its guests get the same Aquaventure wristbands.

Bottom line

Not every cruise excursion is a rip-off, but plenty of them charge a premium for things you can easily do on your own. Before you book, compare the ship's price with the cost of going direct or simply walking off the pier.

The biggest perk of booking through the ship is that the cruise line guarantees your return, meaning the ship waits if its own tour runs late. If you go independent, book morning tours and plan to be back at the pier 90 minutes before all-aboard. Do that, and you'll find easy ways to travel more without blowing your budget.
