5 Popular Cruise Ports That Just Aren't Worth It Anymore

Bigger ships and new fees are wearing down these once-favorite stops

Cruise ships keep getting bigger, but the towns they visit haven't grown at the same pace. Nassau's port expansion pushed its daily capacity from about 20,000 passengers to roughly 33,000, and it set a record of 33,254 visitors in a single day in June 2026. At the same time, Mexico and Greece have added per-passenger fees, and Barcelona is raising its own. If you like to travel on a budget, that's a rough combo: you pay more to share a small downtown with thousands of strangers.

The good news is that most of these ports still deliver once you get past the terminal zone. Here's where the promise and the reality have drifted apart, plus how to make the day work anyway.

Nassau, Bahamas

Nassau is the world's busiest transit cruise port, with an estimated 6.1 million passengers across nearly 1,600 ship calls in 2025. It can now host six full-size ships at once, including three Oasis- or Icon-class vessels, and those ships often show up together. On one record day in 2025, four ships arrived at 8 a.m. That's a lot of people hitting Bay Street, one block from the port, at the same time.

What still works: The Queen's Staircase is free and about a 13-minute walk from the dock, and it leads up to Fort Fincastle. We'd head there first while everyone else shops.

Cozumel, Mexico

Mexico started charging cruise passengers $5 in July 2025, doubled it to $10 on August 1, 2026, and plans to raise it to $15 in July 2027 and $21 in August 2028. You won't pay it at the gangway, though. Cruise lines collect it in advance and typically fold port fees into your fare. Demand isn't slowing either, with 4.8 million cruise visitors to Mexico from January to April 2026, up 14.8%.

The bigger letdown is where you dock. Puerta Maya sits about 5 miles from town and functions as a standalone complex of restaurants and jewelry stores.

What still works: Regulated taxis from Puerta Maya cost around $8 to $10 to downtown San Miguel and $15 to $20 to beach clubs like Paradise Beach, and that covers up to four passengers. Fare charts are posted at the dispatcher stands, so check the price before you hop in.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini has no pier for large ships, so you tender in. Under rules introduced in 2026, 70% of passengers must land at Ormos Fira, which connects to town only by a 600-step staircase or a cable car. Greece also charges up to €20 per passenger in peak season, dropping to €12 in October and from April through May. The pressure is real, and about 1.3 million cruise passengers visited in one year, on an island of 15,500 residents.

What still works: Skip the cable car line entirely. At the tender dock, you can buy a 20-minute boat ride to Ammoudi below Oia for about €30, with a bus up to the village included.

Juneau, Alaska

On past peak days, cruise passengers totaled about two-thirds of Juneau's roughly 32,000 residents. This year is the first with a daily cap of 16,000 passengers on most days and 12,000 on Saturdays, compared with up to 21,000 on the busiest days before. The city still expected about 1.69 million passengers this season. So it's steadier, but that's still a lot of people for a compact downtown.

What still works: The Alaska State Capitol offers free tours, and several trails start within walking distance of downtown. You can also ride the city bus to Douglas for a flat trail from Sandy Beach.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is Europe's busiest cruise port, and the terminals sit farther from the sights than the map suggests. The average cruise passenger spends less than six hours in the city. In September 2026, the city council gave initial approval to raise its surcharge from €5 to €24 for passengers staying under 12 hours, phased in through 2030. Barcelona is also cutting its cruise terminals from seven to five, lowering simultaneous capacity from 37,000 passengers to 31,000 by 2030.

What still works: Take the Cruise Bus into town, walk to the Columbus Monument, and head straight into the Gothic Quarter. The cathedral is just 10 to 15 minutes away on foot, and wandering costs nothing.

Bottom line

None of these ports are bad, exactly. They're just overloaded right around the pier. A cheap taxi, bus, or boat ride past the terminal zone usually gets you the version of the port the itinerary promised.

The highest-value check before booking is seeing how many ships share that port on your date, and port guides like WhatsInPort publish cruise calendars for exactly this. Look at ship size too, not just the count. Juneau's cap is based on lower berths, so third and fourth guests in a cabin don't count toward the limit. It's one of the easiest ways to save money on travel, since you won't pay for a port day spent standing in line.
