Our verdict

Our verdict on GEICO's basic car insurance is that it is much cheaper than Allstate’s and has more discount options.

GEICO offers basic coverage for a reasonable price, and its rates were far lower than Allstate's for our example quote. The cost of GEICO's basic car insurance plan for our example was approximately $800 less per year compared with Allstate's. Plus, the deductible amounts for both companies were similar, so you'd pay about the same amount out of pocket for either.

Both Allstate and GEICO offer additional coverage options that can be added onto your standard policy for an extra cost. These include roadside assistance coverage, rental car reimbursement, and gap protection. Allstate also offers new-car replacement coverage.

We recommend considering GEICO's basic car insurance over Allstate’s if you’re shopping around for a new policy. You'll likely save money in comparison to similar coverage.

GEICO provides some of the lowest auto insurance rates available for drivers with good driving records. It is also friendly to those with spotty driving records, as its extensive list of insurance discounts can combat higher rates from a spotty record.

Despite sharing some things like anti-theft and good student discounts, Allstate is significantly more expensive than GEICO. But Allstate offers more extensive coverage options for car insurance specifically. It also has many options for bundling with other insurance types, such as life insurance or home insurance.

Allstate also rewards drivers with safe driving records. It gives you a bonus every six months for being accident-free.

Although GEICO tends to be more affordable overall, Allstate has a few things that set it apart from the competition. Ultimately, the best car insurance choice will depend on what type of coverage you need and your driving record.

Keep in mind
All insurance companies consider factors like your driving history and (in many states) your credit score to determine the price of your auto insurance policy. Your individual situation could make your costs higher or lower than average rates.

Coverage and availability

GEICO and Allstate both offer a range of car insurance coverage options. You can get liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage, as well as personal injury protection, rental reimbursement, and roadside assistance from either company. Both companies also offer accident forgiveness as an add-on, which means they won’t raise your rates if you’re in an at-fault accident.

Both companies are available in all 50 states, but Allstate has some types of coverage that GEICO doesn’t, namely new-car replacement and gap insurance.

If you prefer to work with a local insurance agent rather than get a free quote online, Allstate has many more physical locations than GEICO. But for customer service, it’s easy to contact either company — both have 24/7 support.

Allstate offers more specialized types of car insurance than GEICO, such as classic or antique car insurance and car insurance for travel to Mexico.

With its competitive rates and long list of discounts, GEICO’s a great choice for budget-conscious drivers who want to customize their policy. On the other hand, Allstate offers more full-coverage options than GEICO, which can make it a better choice for those who need new-car coverage or gap protection.
