What is Allstate?

You’ve probably heard commercials and advertising for Allstate’s famous “you’re in good hands” slogan. Although it seems like the company is everywhere right now, it has a long history of selling insurance products.

Founded in 1931 during the Great Depression by General Robert E. Wood, Allstate was an off-shoot company of mail-order and department store Sears and originally sold insurance exclusively via mail order.

Today, Allstate is headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois, and is one of the most recognized names in insurance and the fourth largest auto insurance provider in the U.S. It has an A+ rating for financial strength from AM Best and a mix of above- and below-average customer satisfaction ratings from J.D. Power, depending on the region.

As of 2021, there are 16 million Allstate customers and more than 175 million Allstate policies in all 50 states.

What insurance does Allstate offer?

Allstate offers a variety of insurance coverages that could help you meet state minimum requirements and ensure you’re covered for whatever the road brings. Available Allstate car insurance coverage options and add-ons include:

  • Liability: Liability coverage helps to cover costs related to injury, death, or property damage to others when you’re at fault in an accident. Having bodily injury and property liability coverage is typically required by state law.
  • Medical payments: Medical payments coverage helps with medical expenses for you or your passengers after an accident.
  • Uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist: This coverage assists with expenses related to being hit by a driver who doesn’t have insurance or who doesn’t have enough insurance to cover the damage done to cover your medical expenses. It may also cover property damage depending on your state and the coverage you choose.
  • Personal injury protection (PIP): PIP is similar to medical payments insurance, except it may cover additional items such as assistance services if you can’t work after an accident. PIP insurance is not available in all states.
  • Collision: Collision insurance assists in covering expenses related to damage to your vehicle from an accident or other type of collision.
  • Comprehensive: Comprehensive car insurance helps to cover expenses related to damage caused by events other than an accident such as vandalism, theft or attempted theft, hail, fallen trees, or hail. A lender or leasing company may require you to keep both collision and comprehensive coverage for the length of your loan or lease. Liability coverage combined with collision and comprehensive coverage is sometimes referred to as full coverage.
  • Personal umbrella policy: A personal umbrella policy provides liability coverage above and beyond your regular auto policy limits.
  • Rental reimbursement: Rental reimbursement helps to cover the cost of renting a car while your vehicle is undergoing repairs after a covered accident.
  • Accident forgiveness: If you’re in an accident— even if it's your fault— your rates won't increase if you add this coverage to your policy.
  • New car replacement: If your new car is totaled within the first two model years, Allstate will replace the car completely, not just send you a check for the current (depreciated) value.
  • Roadside assistance: You can add three different types of roadside assistance through Allstate: Pay-per-use starting at $119 per tow, an annual membership plan starting at $89 for the first year, or you can add roadside assistance coverage to your insurance policy starting at $25 per vehicle per policy term.
  • Rideshare insurance: Regular car insurance doesn’t usually cover business use of your car. If you drive for a rideshare company such as Lyft or Uber, the company may be required by state law to provide you with coverage. You may want more protection, however. Rideshare insurance provides additional coverage to help protect you while you’re working.

Although Allstate has many coverage options, state limitations may restrict the type or amount of coverage available in your area. If you’re searching for a particular kind of coverage, you may need to contact an Allstate agent for help.

In addition to auto insurance, Allstate offers other insurance policies, such as homeowners and renters insurance, that may provide a discount for bundling with your auto policy. Some of the additional types of insurance that Allstate offers include:

  • Homeowners insurance
  • Renters
  • Condo
  • Landlord
  • Motorcycle
  • Off-road vehicle
  • Term life insurance
  • Business insurance
  • Identity protection
  • Phone protection

How to find discounts

Car insurance premiums are based on various factors, including your driving record, your age, gender, and location, and, in some states, your credit score.

Allstate offers the following insurance discounts:

Vehicle safety:

  • Anti-lock brakes discount: If your car came equipped with anti-lock brakes, Allstate might provide a discount on your premium.
  • New car discount: If your car is the current or prior-year model, and you’re the first owner, you might save some money.
  • Anti-theft device discount: This discount may apply if you’ve installed an anti-theft device in your vehicle, such as an alarm system or GPS locator.

Account and policy management:

  • EZ pay plan discount: If you set up an automatic bank withdrawal to pay your premium, you may qualify to save additional money.
  • Multiple policy discount: Having more than one policy through Allstate could help you save some cash.
  • Allstate eSmart discount: Save when you go paperless by signing up for ePolicy and receive your insurance documents online.
  • Early Signing discount: If you sign your policy seven or more days before it becomes effective, you’ll see some additional savings.
  • FullPay discount: Paying your entire premium in full can be a good way to earn a discount with Allstate.
  • Responsible payer discount: If you did not receive a cancellation notice for non-payment in the past year, you’re eligible to save on your premium.

Safe driving:

  • Safe driving club: If you meet the safe driver eligibility requirements, you can join the safe driving club and receive an additional discount on your policy.
  • Smart student discount: If you are unmarried, under age 25, and have a GPA of 2.7 or above, you may be eligible for a discount. Similarly, if you’re unmarried and under 25 and have completed the teenSMART driver education program or attend school 100 miles from where your car is garaged for the semester, you may also earn an additional discount.

In addition to the policy and safe driving discounts offered by many insurance companies, Allstate offers programs that can help you save even more.

  • Drivewise: Drivewise is Allstate’s safe driving program that measures your driving behavior using the Allstate mobile app. The app will give you personalized insights into how to drive safely, such as avoiding hard braking or speeding. Customers will receive a policy discount just for signing up with the program and a performance reward based on their safe driving habits. The program varies by state and may not be available in all areas.

  • Allstate Rewards: The Allstate Rewards program assigns points for completing tasks such as signing up for the Drivewise program or activating your online account. The program will hold challenges to earn additional points, such as going three consecutive days without sudden braking. Points can be redeemed for travel, gift cards, or local offers based on where you live.
  • Milewise: Milewise is Allstate’s pay-per-mile car insurance option. If you drive less than average, you may see significant savings using a pay-per-mile insurance program such as Milewise. Your mileage is tracked using a telemetrics device installed in your car's steering column, and monthly bills are calculated using pre-established daily and per-mile rates. Milewise is currently available in only a few states.

How to maximize savings

In addition to all of the discounts available through Allstate, there are other ways to save money on your car insurance, regardless of your provider. To make the most of your auto insurance savings, consider:

  • A multi-policy discount: If you have home or renter’s insurance and car insurance policies, bundling them with the same company may help you save money. Similarly, if you have two or more vehicles insured by the same company, you may also receive a discount.
  • Focus on safe driving: Having a clean driving record can be one of the best ways to save money on auto insurance. Fender benders, speeding tickets, DUIs, or braking too fast can cost you more in premiums over time.
  • Install anti-theft devices: If your car doesn’t have anti-theft devices installed, consider installing an alarm system or a stolen vehicle recovery transceiver to help police recover your car if it's stolen.
  • Consider raising your deductible: Opting for a higher car insurance deductible can usually help lower your insurance rates. If you raise your deductible, be sure you have enough to cover it and other repair costs in your emergency fund so that you don’t have to worry about an accident.
