Why is Tijuana Flats closing locations now?

Tijuana Flats has been struggling financially and finally decided to make a change by filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April. Under Chapter 11, the company can be reorganized to find ways to move ahead with the restaurant locations that are still open.

TJF USA, LLC, also sold Tijuana Flats to a new organization, Flatheads LLC.

What went wrong?

Tijuana Flats was facing several issues that affected its bottom line.

For example, changes to the menu in 2021 caused Tijuana Flats to lose money. The changes required more equipment and staff, and resulted in both increased costs and slower service for customers.

Rising food prices also affected the company’s bottom line, with customers responding negatively to an increase in menu prices that was necessary to cover the higher cost of ingredients.

What customers have to say

The news about the closings wasn’t completely shocking to some customers who had noticed a decline in the restaurant’s quality.

“I went to Tijuana flats 15 years ago in college and thought it was pretty good and fun to get a bunch of hot sauces,” wrote Reddit member datcorncakelife. “I went there again a few years ago and it was mediocre with small portions.”

Another Reddit member, LandscapeWest2037, wrote that Tijuana Flats used to be one of their favorite places to eat with their wife, but then “the quality went down quickly, the prices went up even quicker, and we couldn't justify going anymore.”

Where you can still find Tijuana Flats

The good news is that Tijuana Flats isn’t closing all of its locations.

The company still has locations across Florida, where Tijuana Flats began. You can also stop by locations in Cary or Holly Springs in North Carolina. Finally, the restaurant has locations in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and Mobile, Alabama.

You may be surprised to see how much you can get ahead financially by making food at home instead of eating at local restaurants such as Tijuana Flats.
