Family Dollar to Close 1,000+ Stores as Trump’s Tariffs Skyrocket Prices

Amid Trump's global tariffs and raising prices, the brand expects to close more stores in 2025 and beyond.

For many families trying to save money on groceries, discount stores like Family Dollar are essential for household goods and everyday essentials. However, Family Dollar is struggling to keep up due to increased competition, supply chain issues, and even a warehouse contamination scandal.

On top of that, global tariffs introduced by the Trump administration are causing prices to rise, hitting retailers like Family Dollar especially hard. In February alone, the Consumer Price Index showed a 0.2% rise in grocery costs.

Then came last week's major announcement of Dollar Tree, which bought Family Dollar 10 years ago for nearly $9 billion, selling the brand to Brigade Capital Management and Macellum Capital for only $1 billion.

As a result, over 1,900 Family Dollar locations will be closing down, including over 600 stores that closed in 2024 and over 1,000 combo stores that house Family Dollar and Dollar Tree in one building.

These closures will affect lower-income communities the most as these families rely on discount stores for affordable household needs.

While Family Dollar's sale is expected to wrap up in June 2025 and official locations for closures have not yet been revealed, check this list to see if your local store has already closed or if it may in the future.

Louisville still has plenty of options for Family Dollar shoppers, with at least 16 locations currently remaining open in the city.

Minnesota

Family Dollar had been at the Litchfield locations for almost three decades. It opened in 1996 before shutting down as part of Family Dollar's downsizing.

Store shelves at the Clearwater location were cleared out while customers stood in long lines to get last-minute bargains before the store shut down, according to one local news station.

Texas

The Seadrift location closed at the end of April and was the only location in the town on the Gulf Coast of Texas.

Virginia

Lynchburg lost half of its Family Dollar locations, with customers now limited to stores on Timberland Road and Fort Avenue, making it difficult for shoppers to get ahead financially by saving on groceries.

West Virginia

The liquidation sale at the Family Dollar store in Elkins was so popular that police were called to help with the flow of traffic into the store's parking lot.

Wisconsin

320 Lincoln Ave., Fennimore

The Family Dollar in Fennimore closed in March 2024, but the building's owners told a local news station that he was aware of the closing as far back as November 2023 when Family Dollar decided not to renew the store's lease.

Bottom line

Family Dollar is a great way to save money on essentials, but there are other ways to save if you're on a tight budget.

It's a good idea to revisit your budget regularly to find new ways to save money and consider putting that cash somewhere else, like an emergency fund, a high-yield savings account, or paying off debt.
