This New Fluted Walmart Dresser Looks Almost Identical to One That Retails for $1,500

Fluted furniture featuring soft decorative wooden grooves to create a vertical pattern is a hot trend in home decor right now, and Walmart has a dresser "dupe," or duplicate, of a much pricier option from the high-end upscale retailer RH. Their version retails at $1,500 for members and $1,995 for "regular" customers.

RH offers upscale home furnishings, so you might expect this dresser to be solid oak — but it's actually only a white oak reeding and veneers over engineered hardwood. "Engineered" wood is actually a wood composite created by binding wood particles together. 

This is favored by manufacturers because it's cheaper to make, but consumers expect to see that savings passed on to them when downgrading from solid hardwood.

The version of this dresser available at Walmart is not perfectly identical, but it's similar enough that if you like one you'll like the other, too. It's crafted from MDF, a medium-density fiberboard, which is a specific type of engineered wood. The most obvious difference is this dresser includes four legs. 

However, it looks like those could be left off to create an even more similar visual effect. It's not specified, but it almost certainly has a fake veneer to resemble oak — but that's not a bad trade to save over a thousand dollars.

While the Dune Dresser by Jenni Kayne Home may not be visually similar to the fluted trend, it's the closest we could find in 100% solid oak. One could buy the woodworking machinery and oak planks to make their own dresser for that price!   

The fluted furniture trend doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg, and Walmart has the most affordable option on clearance right now. They also have other similar dupes priced slightly higher and not in the clearance section, so you'll have plenty of options in a similar price range and with varying drawers in case you want a matching set.
