Wawa moves forward with new locations

In October, Wawa announced plans to expand into North Carolina with eight new locations in the Tar Heel State in 2024.

The retailer broke ground in May on one of these locations, in Kill Devil Hills in the Outer Banks area. The company plans to open two locations in Wilson and another two in Goldsboro. There will also be stores in Elizabeth City, Rocky Mount, and Greenville.

Those eight stores are only the start of Wawa’s expansion plans, however. The company also said it has more than 30 sites under contract right now in the state that are at various stages of getting approval from local authorities.

Wawa hopes to have an additional 15 stores open in 2025 and 10 more open in 2026. When all is said and done, Wawa expects to open 80 locations in eastern and central North Carolina, and 280 total, including in Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky, over the next decade.

So, consider yourself lucky if you’re in one of those areas, and keep an eye out for announcements of a new Wawa opening close to you.

What new stores mean for the state’s economy

Fans of Wawa are likely excited to see new locations pop up in their areas. The new stores also can be good for the local economy.

Wawa estimates that the expansion will create more than 2,800 jobs throughout the state for North Carolinians, with around 35 associates needed for each location that opens.

The company is already investing millions of dollars into the expansion process and estimates that each location will cost around $7 million to build and will create employment for around 140 local contractors and partners.

The retailer also has plenty of coffee options. You can either get a hot cup of coffee in the morning or grab single-cup servings or a bag of ground coffee to take home with you.
