Solitaire Cube takes the classic card game of Solitaire and transforms it into a competitive experience where players can win real cash prizes. Released by Tether Studios, it has millions of players globally and holds a top 100 ranking among casino games on the App Store.

After downloading Solitaire Cube on my iPhone, I was prompted to create an account and choose an avatar before starting to play. The game follows the standard rules of Klondike Solitaire — players attempt to build up four suit foundations from ace to king while sorting remaining cards into descending, alternating color stacks in the tableau area.

How does Solitaire Cube work?

After creating my account, I was immediately entered into a tutorial game. While the core mechanics were familiar to me as a casual Solitaire player, Solitaire Cube adds a layer of intensity with time constraints and a scoring system. Each game gives you a five-minute timer to score as many points as possible.

Stacking cards in the foundations earned me the biggest point bonuses, but I also scored for making moves in the tableau and for any remaining time left when I finished or the clock expired.

I found this created a more high-pressure gaming experience, unlike the relaxed pace of a standard Solitaire game. With the clock ticking down, I was trying to clear cards, unlock new moves, and focus on building the foundations as quickly as possible.

The game ends when you complete the four foundation stacks, the time runs out, or you manually end the game because you can’t make any moves.

After playing the first game and collecting a free daily reward, I had a total of 44 "Z coins," the in-game virtual currency. You can earn more Z coins by winning games, watching ads, and doing other activities, which made it easy for me to continue playing the free game mode. You can also deposit your own money to participate in cash tournaments.

Game modes

Here are some of the game modes available in Solitaire Cube:

• Practice: This is the standard free game mode where you can play against another player using Z coins as the entry fee. Prizes include Z coins, tickets, and Leagues medals. Since you aren't playing with real money, this is a risk-free option and the one I played the most.
• Head-to-head: Play against another player using your cash balance. Prizes include cash, tickets, and Leagues medals.
• Brackets: Play against multiple players using your cash balance or Z coins. Prizes could include cash, Z coins, tickets, and Leagues medals.
• Events: Use your cash balance to play against other players in limited-time events. Prizes often include cash and tickets.

Leagues

After playing five games, I was automatically entered into Leagues. Leagues are an ongoing timed prize pool where you compete against other players for a portion of a specific prize pool.

The more Leagues medals you earn from playing different game modes, the higher your Leagues ranking will be. Leagues are divided into Pro and Practice categories, depending on whether you use Z coins or your cash balance to play different game modes. You can win Z coins and tickets from the Practice Leagues category and cash or tickets from the Pro Leagues category.

As I played, I found the earnings potential ranged from just a few dollars for the smallest buy-in tournaments to $200 or more for the biggest prize pools. However, the entry fees for these games are often steep.

For example, I saw a tournament that requires a $120 entry fee, and the winner gets $200. There’s more than a fair share of risk involved here, since it is unlikely that you'll win against the large network of online players who are playing for these bigger prizes. Even if you do win, you're earning $80 after you subtract the entry fee.

You could also play for much lower stakes, such as paying $3 to play for a cash prize of $5. These smaller buy-ins are a great option for casual players looking to earn a little extra spending money.

If you don’t want to deposit any of your own money, you would need to earn enough bonus cash through in-game activities to participate in cash tournaments. This involves activities such as referring friends or earning tickets by playing different game modes. Tickets have different redemption options within the app, including bonus cash and products.

Keep in mind that you only earn one ticket for playing any of the free game modes, and it takes 20,000 tickets to get $1 of bonus cash. And sometimes the prize for free games doesn't include tickets. You can earn them from daily check-ins and other in-app activities, but it would likely take weeks to earn just $1 in bonus cash. 

How to get paid by Solitaire Cube

If you want to cash out money from your cash balance, it’s as simple as selecting “Withdraw” from the in-game menu, which is an available option if you’ve created a Skillz account and have money in your account. You can’t withdraw bonus cash, but you can withdraw any money you’ve deposited or won. 

Cash withdrawals up to your deposit amount are returned by the same method used for the original deposit, including a credit card or PayPal account. Any withdrawal amount over your deposit amount is sent by mailed check for U.S. players and PayPal in other locations.
