Why is Stop &Shop closing stores?
Stop & Shop announced the closures in July as part of a measure to cut out underperforming stores.
“Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand,” said Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid in a press release announcing the closures.
When will stores close?
The company hasn’t announced specific dates for when stores will close so you may have a little more time to shop at your local Stop & Shop before it locks its doors for good.
But the company does expect all locations affected by cuts to be shut down by November 2, 2024.
What will happen to Stop & Shop employees?
The good news for employees is that they’ll be able to move to another local Stop & Shop rather than losing their jobs as part of the closures.
“Our associates are a strong community dedicated to growing and working together, and all of our store associates will continue to have a place in the Stop & Shop family as we look forward to serving customers at other nearby locations,” Reid said in a press release.
Other changes coming to Stop & Shop
Stop & Shop is making another big change to its customer experience by removing tobacco products from its stores.
The retailer said it would stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products as part of its commitment to community wellness. Customers should expect tobacco products off the shelves starting in September 2024.
