Why choose a 0% intro APR credit card

A 0% intro APR period typically removes any interest charges on balance transfers or purchases for a certain amount of time. These offers are benefits that cardholders can receive in addition to any other applicable benefits and perks, such as a sign-up bonus or earning rewards.

You might consider using a 0% intro APR offer for these reasons:

  • To do a balance transfer: You might transfer a balance of debt to a credit card with a 0% intro APR offer to avoid paying interest on that debt for a certain number of months. This could help you pay down the debt while avoiding high interest charges. But you’d have to include the balance transfer fee amount (typically between 3% to 5% of the transfer amount) in your calculations to see if a transfer would be worth it.
  • To make a large purchase: Credit cards can be handy for making purchases if you don’t have enough cash on hand or don’t want to dip into your savings. But interest charges typically make carrying a balance a poor financial strategy. However, a 0% intro APR offer could help you make an essential purchase and get it paid off over time — all without paying any interest.

What to consider when applying for a 0% intro APR credit card

Keep these considerations in mind when applying for a 0% APR credit card:

  • Why do you want the card? Do you have an upcoming large purchase to make or are you looking to pay down debt with a balance transfer credit card? Make sure a card has the type of 0% intro APR offer you need for your situation. An intro offer for balance transfers isn’t the same as an offer for purchases.
  • Intro offer details: Review the details of the intro APR offer. Will the promotional APR period be long enough to completely get your credit card debt paid off after a balance transfer? Or will it be enough time for you to pay off an urgent purchase without having to worry about interest? You may need to make more than the minimum payments to ensure your purchase or transfer is paid off before your 0% interest period runs out.
  • Potential fees: Look out for balance transfer fees and annual fees. Include any fees in your calculations to make sure it would still be worth it to do a balance transfer. It might not be — even with a 0% intro APR offer — if the fees are high. And if you’re offered a lower credit limit than you expected, balance transfer and annual fees will lower your available credit even more. Note that some cards offer a $0 annual fee during the first year, but have a higher fee after that.
  • Credit score: What’s your FICO credit score? The best credit card offers from Bank of America, American Express, Chase, Citi, Discover, U.S. Bank, and Wells Fargo are typically reserved for applicants with good credit or excellent credit.
  • Earning potential: Does the credit card offer any rewards or a sign-up bonus? Being able to earn rewards could be an excellent reason to keep a card long after a 0% intro APR offer has run out.
  • Type of rewards: Is the credit card a cash back card, travel rewards card, or another type of card? Find a card that aligns with your rewards preferences.
  • Earning categories: If a credit card earns rewards, how are they earned? Is it a flat rewards rate for every eligible purchase or are there specific bonus categories, such as gas stations or supermarkets, where you might earn a higher percentage? You might prefer one method over the other.
  • Redemption options: Earning rewards might be nice, but only if their redemption options align with your preferences. Whether it’s statement credits, flights, gift cards, or another type of redemption, find a card that has options you prefer.

Bank of America intro APR credit card FAQ

Does Bank of America have a zero-interest credit card?

What is the difference between an APR and an interest rate?

The difference between an APR, or annual percentage rate, and an interest rate is that an APR could also include other costs. For example, an interest rate on a loan typically reflects the percentage of interest you would have to pay to borrow money. But an APR on a loan might reflect the total cost of borrowing money, including the interest rate and any additional charges or fees.

What is the APR for the Bank of America credit card?

Bank of America offers various credit cards that have different APRs depending on the specific card. One of these cards is the BankAmericard® credit card, which has 0% intro APR for 18 billing cycles for any qualifying balance transfers made in the first 60 days, then 16.24% - 26.24% Variable APR. It also offers 0% intro APR on purchases for 18 billing cycles, then 16.24% - 26.24% Variable APR.

What is the difference between a credit card and a debit card?

The primary difference between a credit card and a debit card is the source of the money being used to make purchases. Credit cards use money that’s borrowed from a lender such as a bank or other financial institution. Debit cards use your own money that’s already stored in a connected bank account.

What is the Preferred Rewards program?

The Preferred Rewards program is a Bank of America program that rewards you based on your qualifying combined balances in Bank of America and/or Merrill investment accounts. If you qualify, you could receive a 25% (Gold tier) to 75% (Platinum Honors tier) rewards bonus on any eligible Bank of America credit cards.
