American University COVID-19 spring semester tuition settlement

Deadline: April 1, 2024

Were you attending American University when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the US in March 2020?

If so — and if you were paying your tuition and other university fees out of pocket rather than through a scholarship or grant — you could secure a partial refund of your school expenses.

Once the settlement is finalized, valid claimants will likely receive up to $475 apiece.

JBS indirectly purchased pork settlement

Deadline: April 2, 2024.

JSB USA, a meat processing company, was accused of fixing pork prices starting in 2009.

If you or your business indirectly bought fresh or frozen JBS-brand raw pork between June 28, 2014, and June 30, 2018, you could have a valid claim in the JBS settlement.

While JBS has settled for $20 million, it’s not clear how much money, if any, claimants will be awarded. In part, that’s because additional prosecution against JBS and its named co-defendants, including Smithfield, Tyson Foods, and Hormel, is ongoing.

But if you don’t want to be locked out of your piece of the settlement in this particular case, you need to apply by the April 2 deadline.

Kia and Hyundai engine failure settlement

Deadline: April 5, 2024

According to this class action suit, some Kia makes and models were outfitted with defective engines between 2010 and 2020.

Some of these vehicles may have experienced engine failures, fires, seizures, or stalling, and when drivers tried to have their engines repaired, they were unfairly denied warranty coverage and had to pay for fixes out of pocket.

Kia’s settlement amount hasn’t been made public. Cash payments for victims will vary depending on how much you had to pay out of pocket for car repairs and for expenses related to the engine failure (for instance, paying for a tow truck or car rental).

Allstate California insurance premiums settlement

WESTOCK/Adobe files on judge table

Deadline: April 9, 2024

Did you insure a vehicle with Allstate while living in California between July 2016 and September 2022?

In this suit, Allstate allegedly calculated rates for certain insurance policies using market factors that unfairly raised policyholder premiums. Ultimately, the company settled for $25 million.

While the total amount each legitimate claimant receives will vary based on how many people submit a claim, the current payout estimate is $12.40 per person.

Astroworld Festival Magic Money settlement

Deadline: April 9, 2024

The 2021 Astroworld Festival was a Houston-based event sponsored by rapper Travis Scott. After a tragedy occurred on the first day of the festival, organizers canceled it.

However, many concertgoers had already purchased Magic Money, a wristband-based electronic payment system that was the only way to make purchases at the festival. The money they spent to purchase Magic Money was never refunded.

Recently, Magic Money (which has since rebranded to MagicTix) settled for $335,000. If you were at the festival, purchased Magic Money, and were never reimbursed, you’re likely eligible for a full refund.

If you bought your Magic Money via credit or debit card, the refund will be automatic with no further action on your part. However, if you purchased Magic Money using Venmo, cash, or PayPal, you need to file by the April 9th deadline to qualify for a refund.

Verizon Wireless (Cellco Partnership) admin fees settlement

Deadline: April 15, 2024

Between January 2016 and November 2023, Verizon Wireless (one brand used by Cellco Partnership) allegedly charged certain customers an extra administrative fee that wasn’t disclosed upfront. Verizon/Cellco settled the case for $100 million.

Everyone with a valid claim will receive at least $15 upfront, but you’ll also earn an additional $1 for every month you paid the undisclosed admin fee. (Note that the total payment amount is capped at $100 per individual.)

Subaru Ascent CVT settlement

Deadline: April 15, 2024

Did you purchase or lease a 2019 or 2020 Subaru Ascent with ongoing power-loss problems?

According to this settlement, Subaru knew a defective CVT (continuously variable transmission) was responsible for the power loss and didn’t disclose that information to customers who continued paying out of pocket for problems caused by the CVT.

If your Subaru Ascent has a defective CVT, you likely qualify for an extended warranty covering 100,000 miles or eight years.

Plus, if you’ve tried repairing your CVT before, you might be eligible for a voucher of $400 (for up to two repair visits) or $750 (for three or more repair visits).

Bottom line

For the most part, a class action settlement won’t make or break your budget — but when you’re maintaining a budget, every dollar counts. Don’t miss the opportunity to boost your bank account.

If you have a valid claim to any of these settlements, make sure to file by the deadline to secure the payment you’re owed.
