When an action taken by a large entity like a corporation harms a big group of people, a class action suit is one of the best ways to ensure each victim can receive some compensation.

While potential beneficiaries are notified via mail that they could be eligible for receiving damages, it’s easy to mistake a notification for junk mail. That means many people are unaware of the money they could be entitled to from a class action settlement.

If you could have a claim in any of these suits wrapping up in December, check the deadline and file a claim now to see if you're eligible for compensation that can help boost your bank account.

Claim-filing deadline: 12/15/2023

Frontier-Mt. Carroll Mutual Insurance is an Illinois-based mutual insurance company that offers homeowner, farm owner, farm property, and dwelling fire insurance coverage.

Insurance policyholders who received actual cash value payments for property loss claims filed in Illinois between February 2020 and September 2021 might be eligible for a share of the settlement.

According to the lawsuit, the company allegedly deducted labor depreciation from the cash-value payments it made to its policyholders, which is against the law.

Claimants who haven’t yet received compensation for the wrongfully deducted labor depreciation might be eligible for 112.5% of the amount withheld.

Those who have received some form of compensation could receive 2.5% to 10% of the amount withheld. The average payout for each type of claimant is, respectively, $1,722 and $60 per person.

Claim-filing deadline: 12/19/2023

Did you buy any Woolite Color Renew laundry detergent products in California, New York, or Massachusetts between 2017 and 2023?

According to this class action lawsuit, those color renewal products didn’t actually renew any colors in the faded laundry. As is typical with class action suits, Reckitt Benckiser (the company that owns Woolite) hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing.

Even if you don’t have proof of purchase, you may still be able to file a claim to get a cash payment equal to the value of three Woolite Color Renew products. You could get a cash payout for any additional Color Renew products you bought if you have proof of purchase.

Ethos Technologies data breach settlement

Claim-filing deadline: 12/20/2023

Unfortunately, data breaches happen so frequently that they’re now among the staples of the class action lawsuit world.

In this case, Ethos Technologies — an enterprise-level content management solution — allegedly experienced a data breach between August and December of 2022. As a result of the breach, third parties accessed sensitive personal data shared with Ethos by clients, third-party contractors, and employees alike.

Only those who received a notice of the data breach between August and December of last year are eligible to file a claim.

As is typical of data breach settlements, claimants may receive 12 free months of Experian credit monitoring and identity protection services. You could also be reimbursed for out-of-pocket costs related to the data breach for up to $5,000.

Thanks to California’s more intensive Consumer Privacy Act requirements, Californian claimants could be eligible for an extra $100 payout.

Claim-filing deadline: 12/21/2023

Metromile is a pay-per-mile car insurance program, meaning that, unlike traditional car insurance, Metromile insurance costs a monthly fee along with a fee per mile driven during the month.

Regrettably, Metromile experienced a data breach between June 2020 and January 2021 that allegedly compromised the data of more than 100,000 Metromile customers.

Data lost to hackers included customers’ driver’s license numbers, names, and phone numbers, among other sensitive personal data. If your data was leaked, you should have received a notice from Metromile via mail around March 2021.

As with the Ethos Technology data breach settlement, Metromile’s claimants can be reimbursed for up to $5,000 in out-of-pocket costs. Alternatively, you can accept a flat-rate payment of $30 per person.

If it was, you could receive a $100 cash payout, reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses up to $5,000, and reimbursement for time spent dealing with the results of the breach for up to five hours (at a rate of $25 per hour).

If your personal information was compromised, but your Social Security Number wasn’t, you could receive an out-of-pocket reimbursement for up to $750 plus compensation for up to three hours spent dealing with the fallout (at a rate of $20 an hour).

Depending on what personal data you lost in the breach, you could be eligible for reimbursement of up to $310 plus compensation for up to three hours of time spent dealing with the consequences of the data loss.

If you lost more sensitive personal data, your reimbursement could be up to $5,000.

Claim-filing deadline: 12/21/2023

Lloyd’s of London is a U.K.-based insurance marketplace. According to the suit, some of its syndicates (groups of Lloyd’s-supported insurers) violated the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO Act) by hiding the lack of direct competitors in the sphere when selling insurance policies.

The alleged RICO violation occurred between 1997 and 2023 and could impact anyone who bought or renewed a Lloyd’s of London insurance policy from its syndicates numbered 510, 1084, 1096, and 1245.

If you’re a qualified plaintiff, you could be entitled to a cash payment based on how much you spent on insurance premiums during the above timeframe.

There’s no information on the average payout per claimant, but Lloyd’s settled the suit for $7.9 million.

Like Magellan Health, Health Net is a Centene-owned health insurance provider that lost members’ sensitive identifying information in a data breach.

The lost data included members ' sensitive health information along with Social Security numbers, addresses, and insurance numbers.

If you were affected, you can choose between three different settlement options: Three years of free credit monitoring, cash payments reimbursing you for up to $10,000 of out-of-pocket expenses, or cash fund payments.

According to this class action suit, Ashley Furniture advertised some of its products as being sold at a discount — but the supposed “discount” wasn’t a discount at all, meaning customers purchased products at typical market prices.

If you bought “discounted” furniture or other Ashley products between 2017 and 2022 at a physical Ashley Furniture store or between 2018 and 2022 from Ashley’s website, you could receive a $30 company voucher.

Uber Eats New York background check settlement

amnaj/Adobe lawyers and services

Claim-filing deadline: 12/29/2023

Between October 2015 and July 2021, Uber Eats allegedly performed flawed criminal background checks on New York City residents who applied to drive for Uber Eats.

According to the class action suit, Uber Eats didn’t make certain legal disclosures regarding its background check process. It unfairly denied specific individuals’ driver applications based on their criminal records.

Depending on how you were impacted by the background check, you could be entitled to a one-time payout of $70 or a higher one-time payment.

If you qualify for the higher one-time payment, Uber Eats should have notified you via mail and informed you of your estimated benefits amount.

Broiler chicken price-fixing settlement

Gorodenkoff/Adobe judge hearing case at court

Claim-filing deadline: 12/31/2023

Per this lawsuit, certain raw chicken wholesalers engaged in price fixing, which violates consumer and antitrust law at the federal and state level.

So far, companies that have settled include Fieldale, George’s, Mar-Jac, Peco, Pilgrim’s, and Tyson. Other chicken wholesalers are still in the process of working out a settlement.

You might be entitled to a payout if you bought fresh or frozen whole birds, breast portions, or tenderloin portions of chicken from the brands listed above between 2009 and 2019.

However, the settlement currently applies only to consumers in 24 states, including California, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, and Wisconsin. (Consumers in Washington, D.C., are also eligible for a settlement payout.)

You don’t need to provide proof of purchase to be eligible for the settlement. Since more than a dozen chicken companies still haven’t settled, it’s unclear what the ultimate payout could be for the settled and unsettled cases.

Bottom line

Studio Romantic/Adobe diverse lawyers sit at desk at meeting

Some class action lawsuits result in major payouts or substantial reimbursements, while others result in a $30 voucher or compensation for the cost of a few bottles of laundry detergent.

While you might be hoping for a bigger settlement, it could be worth submitting a claim for any payment, no matter how small.

After all, when you're trying to get ahead financially, every penny counts, so don’t leave the potential money for a settlement behind just because it only totals a few dollars.
