Easter 2024: What's Open and Closed on Sunday?

Whether you celebrate Easter or not, the holiday could impact your daily schedule, especially if you tend to do your shopping on the weekends or prefer to hit up discount and big box stores to save on everyday essentials. 

Wondering which of your favorite stores will close early on Easter Sunday and which will stay open all day? Keep reading to avoid a wasted shopping trip this March 31st.

With stand-out bargains on egg-shaped candies, plastic eggs, and cozy floral decorations, Target is a top shopping destination for springtime fans and Easter celebrants alike. 

But make sure to tackle your Target-based Easter shopping before the holiday, not the morning of. Target will be taking a company-wide holiday on Sunday, March 31st.

Depending on where you live, your local Target probably closes around 10 p.m. on Saturday. Check your local Target’s hours if you need to reschedule your Sunday Target run for Saturday evening.

Luckily for last-minute, bargain-focused shoppers, Walmart’s doors will be open regular hours on Easter Sunday. 

If you need to run to the store for a missing ingredient for your Easter feast or an extra bag of Reese’s chocolate eggs, your nearest Walmart will be open during typical business hours on March 31st.

Most Walmarts open at 6 a.m. and close around 10 or 11 p.m. Check your nearest store location to find the exact hours of operation.

If you’re a buy-in-bulk shopper, you may be out of luck this Easter Sunday. Costco Warehouses will be closed nationwide on the 31st.

Were you hoping to replace your Easter Sunday Costco run with a shopping trip to another club-based warehouse? You’ll be disappointed if you head to your nearest Sam’s Club: Like Costco, this popular warehouse will keep its doors closed Easter Sunday.

To finish your weekend shopping on time, swing by your nearest Sam’s Club between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday. If you don’t make it in time, you’ll still have alternatives — especially Walmart, which is open on Easter (and owns Sam’s Club). 

You won’t be able to buy your favorite items in warehouse sizes (and at warehouse prices), but you can still take advantage of Walmart’s famously low prices.

Albertsons is a chain grocery store operating in 34 states plus Washington, DC. 

Depending on where you live, you might know it under a different name (Safeway, Vons, Haggen, Acme, and Randalls are just a few of the 20 brands operating under the Albertsons Companies banner).

Albertsons doesn’t celebrate Easter as a national holiday, so your local Albertsons (or Albertsons subsidiary) should be open during regular Sunday business hours on March 31st. Just to be sure, though, check with your local store to verify hours before leaving the house.

Trader Joe’s is typically open from 8 am to 9 pm on Sundays — and that will be true this upcoming Easter Sunday as well. While Trader Joe’s usually closes at five on holidays like Easter, it’s opting to maintain regular hours this year instead.

If you need some last-second Easter gifts at bottom dollar, Dollar General will be open during its usual operating hours on Sunday, the 31st. Most Dollar Generals open at 8 a.m. and close at 9 or 10 p.m., but check your specific location’s address for its exact hours.

Are new Easter clothes one of your family traditions? If you're considering putting off your dress shopping trip until Sunday morning, don't make Macy's your destination. All Macy's stores will be closed on Easter, March 31st.

For the most part, Macy's stays open until 9 p.m. on Saturdays, so if you're a weekend shopper, be sure to swing by Macy's by Saturday night.

Easter isn’t an official paid holiday for PetSmart employees, but according to USA Today, the store plans to close an hour early on Easter Sunday. Instead of 7 p.m., all PetSmarts will be shutting their doors at 6 pm on March 31st only.

Do you count on that extra hour on Sunday evenings to pick up food for your favorite furry family members? 

Petco doesn’t plan on changing its hours on Easter Sunday, but depending on where you live, regular Sunday hours could mean Petco regularly closes at 6 pm anyway. Be sure to look up your store’s hours to verify Sunday’s typical closing time.

Aldi’s German-inspired style and low prices have made it the fastest-growing supermarket chain in the U.S. 

That rapid growth will be put on hold on Easter Sunday since all Aldi stores will close nationwide this holiday. Look up the Aldi closest to you for your local store’s Saturday hours.
