CVS Is Closing 271 Stores in 2025 (Is Yours One?)

It's not a secret that American shopping habits have shifted dramatically over the past few years. From online retail accessibility to a shrinking middle class where nearly every family is tightening their budgets and looking for ways to save more on everyday essentials, some retailers have resorted to drastic measures.

This changing economic climate has left many major chain stores having to adapt, and CVS is no exception. The company has closed 900 stores in the past three years, and plans to close hundreds more this year. The pharmacy chain giant insists that this is not a reaction to industry pressure, but rather an effort to realign its retail footprint to better serve customers.

An annual report filed by CVS in February indicated they plan to close 271 locations in 2025. This is part of a restructuring plan to streamline and simplify chain-wide organization in response to shifting populations, buying patterns, store density and proximity, pharmacy access, and community health needs.

The closings of the past year have impacted more than just customers, as approximately 5,000 jobs have been cut as CVS store locations shutter their doors. It's not all closings, though. According to the company, about 100 new stores were opened in the past three years. This, about 30 new locations set to open, including some that will be located inside Target department stores.

CVS has declined to provide details to many outlets about which specific locations are closing. However, The Krazy Coupon Lady and Newsweek reported the following locations based on information from local news outlets.

• 499 Haight St.

The Haight St. CVS was originally scheduled to close in 2023. However, due to community pushback, the decision was reversed until now.

Corporate communications declined to provide context for the planned closing or the reversal, but it seems likely the closure was planned due to high theft rates. According to several news outlets, the store is once again set for closing, but it is still listed as open on the official CVS website.

• 27700 Harper Ave.

There will only be one CVS in Saint Clair Shores after the Harper Ave. location closes, but according to the CVS website, it is still open for now.

• 34 N. Cannon Ave.

Hagerstown will keep its Cannon Ave. location until June 26, according to The Herald-Mail.

As part of the 34 locations reported online as slated for shutdown, the following states have already seen store closures.

• Bessemer: 2901 Morgan Rd.
• Birmingham: 3303 Clairmont Ave.

Bessemer isn't just losing a pharmacy. They've also lost a CVS distribution center. The pharmacy chain sold the location for $22 million in 2023 to an auto service company.

• Sacramento: 1701 K St.

The region is losing more than just CVS stores. Several have closed over the past few years, but Walgreens locations have shut down as well.

• Tallahassee: 3090 S. Monroe St.
• Orlando: 13300 E. Colonial Dr.
• Orlando: 2201 Edgewater Dr.

Some retirees relying on the Affordable Care Act are already unhappy with CVS, so Floridians might not be sad to see these locations go. In May, the pharmacy giant announced it would be withdrawing from the program that gives access to affordable health care to millions.

This will impact Aetna, which is owned by CVS Health. The changes will take effect during the 2026 enrollment period.

• Atlanta: 439 Highland Blvd.

Major competitor Walgreens also saw five closings in May, including locations in Decatur, Lawrenceville, Macon, Snellville, and Stone Mountain.

• Chicago: 8639 S. Cicero Ave.
• Chicago: 401 W. Armitage Ave.
• Highland Park: 2000 Skokie Valley Rd.

Highland Park didn't really lose their Skokie Valley Rd. store, so much as have it relocated into the Target down the street. This means there will continue to be two locations to choose from in the town.

• Indianapolis: 9550 Allisonville Rd.

In addition to recent news on closures, some locations in Indiana have been blamed for frequent medication mistakes.

• Ames: 2420 Lincoln Way
• Des Moines: 215 Euclid Ave.

Ames only has one CVS location now, so locals will have to go to S. Duff St. if they want to stay loyal to the chain pharmacy. Des Moines is down to two remaining locations.

• Boston: 55 Summer St.

CVS Health Corp. is also discontinuing a Wellesley-based accountable care business that will result in 183 employees being laid off. Many of these employees are remote and received notice via a Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notice (WARN).

• Federal Hill, Baltimore: 1000 S. Charles St.
• Bethesda: 7235 Wisconsin Ave.

Maryland has seen a few other CVS locations close this year, including locations in Halethorpe and in the Govans neighborhood.

• Roseville: 28774 Gratiot Ave.

Roseville no longer has a CVS, so customers will need to seek locations in neighboring cities. This follows the closure of Rite Aid's nearly 200 stores in the state last year, raising concerns about pharmacy desertion for residents.

• Kansas City: 2435 Independence Ave.
• Kansas City: 4531 Troost Ave.
• Saint Louis: 9433 Manchester Rd.

Kansas City will still have 19 remaining CVS stores after the two new closures. Larger cities are less likely to suffer from "pharmacy deserts," but smaller cities that are losing their pharmacies are concerned they may have to travel to bigger cities to get their necessary medications.

• North Tonawanda: 955 Payne Ave.
• Albany: 153 Central Ave.
• Albany: 1026 Madison Ave.
• New York: 1241 Lexington Ave.
• Staten Island: 1654 Richmond Ave.

New York State has the fourth most CVS stores in the country, so there will be 532 remaining locations.

• Winston-Salem: 201 W. 4th St.

This location won't remain vacant, as it has been purchased for $1.5 million to be transformed into a new "experiential entertainment" venue.

• Cleveland: 10825 Kinsman Rd.

Ohio is also losing two Walgreens locations in June, prompting rural fears of "pharmacy deserts" that could impact residents.

• Plymouth: 125 E. Main St.

Pennsylvania is only losing one CVS, but it's losing 36 Rite Aids due to bankruptcy. CVS has agreed to acquire the prescription files of 625 Rite Aid locations throughout the U.S., including many in Pennsylvania.

• Beaumont: 3890 Phelan Blvd.

According to The Beaumont Enterprise, the Phelan Blvd. location has closed, but there are still four CVS stores left in Beaumont. Customers received notification via text message, and indicated accounts would be transferred to the West End location.

• Fairfax: 10390 Willard Way

Despite the many closures, CVS says 85% of Americans will still live within 10 miles of one of their pharmacy locations.

• 1100 4th St. SW.
• 400 Massachusetts Ave. NW.
• 1515 New York Ave. NE.
• 4500 Wisconsin Ave. NW.
• 7828 Georgia Ave. NW.

In May, D.C. also lost a CVS on East Street in Northwest D.C., with prescriptions being transferred to the location at 2000 Pennsylvania Ave. NW.

Employees were said to be offered comparable roles elsewhere in the company.

CVS first announced its major retail realignment plan in 2021 and closed 900 stores between 2022 and 2024. This year will see 271 CVS closures, but openings aren't on pause. Nearly 30 new locations are expected to open this year, with many being located inside of Target department stores.

This could allow them to focus on the pharmacy aspect of CVS while allowing Target to handle the everyday essentials customers need. And combined with the best cash back credit cards and Target's loyalty rewards program, shoppers could end up saving some money.
