Farmers Insurance Group, often shortened to Farmers, is the seventh-largest auto insurance company. That's why you've probably heard of it — that, and the pretty catchy jingle. But how does it compare to other car insurance companies? The answer is mixed.
While Farmers provides more coverage options and add-ons than many of its competitors, its rates are largely uncompetitive and quite high or average across the board. However, it has a comparatively large list of available discounts, and its independent customer service ratings are better than most. It also sets itself apart with an incredibly low volume of complaints, which goes a long way toward its solid reputation. And with over 48,000 agents, it may also be a good choice for getting personalized support.
All in all, I can see Farmers being best for people looking for specialty coverage and add-ons and drivers who value customer service. It isn't likely to provide you with the best rates, regardless of your driver profile, but the story might be different if you can qualify for one or more of its many (many) discounts. Although Farmers offers one or more types of insurance products in all 50 states, its auto insurance is only available in 42 states.
How we evaluate products
FinanceBuzz researches a number of factors in each auto insurance provider to create our reviews. These factors include cost and discounts, complaints and customer satisfaction, coverage, and ease of use. We also gather information from sources such as Insurify, J.D. Power, AM Best, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), and the Better Business Bureau to ensure we provide the most useful information to our readers.
Farmers auto insurance pros and cons
- High claims and customer satisfaction
- More discounts than many competitors
- Many coverage add-ons and specialty policies
- Not available in all 50 states
- Higher premiums than many other companies
Excluded states
Farmers car insurance is available in all states except Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia. How much does Farmers auto insurance cost?
For the most part, Farmers' auto insurance costs are close to average. The company's premiums are lower than the national average in some cases and higher in others, but no demographics stand out as receiving especially competitive rates with this insurer.
In particular, it isn't a good choice for teen drivers based purely on rates. For this demographic, its premiums are well above average and not even close to the best prices (for teen drivers, I like to recommend State Farm, Progressive, and The General). Its rates for senior drivers are close to average or very slightly better, but many of its others fall on the wrong side of that line.
I'd be more inclined to recommend Farmers for liability-only coverage than full — you're not likely to save on car insurance if you choose full coverage with this insurer. In many cases, including for people with accidents and other incidents, its rates are a bit better than average for liability insurance but higher for full.
Editor's note
Farmers is closest in size to Liberty Mutual, but its premiums are mostly a bit better.Driver type | Farmers liability-only monthly premium | Farmers full coverage monthly premium |

Is Farmers car insurance good?
Company ratings:
- AM Best: A (Excellent)
- J.D. Power claims satisfaction: 706/1,000 (study average 697)
- BBB: A+
- NAIC complaints: 0.36 (Private Passenger)
By most metrics, Farmers car insurance is not only good but great from the perspective of customer complaints and satisfaction, especially when you look at its NAIC index.
The national complaint index, as determined by the NAIC, is 1.00. The closer a company's index is to this, the more expected its share of complaints for its size. If a company's index is greater than this, it means it holds more than its fair share of complaints (and vice versa for less). Farmers' NAIC complaint index of 0.36 tells me that the company is doing right by its customers. It's one of the lowest indices I've ever seen. (Farm Bureau, however, has it beat with an index of 0.15.)
The insurer's J.D. Power rating is decently strong. It isn't in the top five companies or anything, but it is above average, and it beats larger competitors like Progressive and GEICO. But it's also beaten by Liberty Mutual, Nationwide, and State Farm, to name just a few, putting it firmly in the top-middle of the pack. This translates to customers who are mostly happy with the claims process Farmers provides, with some room for improvement. The same can be said for its AM Best grade. A isn't bad, but when the scale goes up to A++, AM Best is saying that Farmers has an excellent ability to fulfill its financial obligations to customers but isn't exceptional.

Discounts
Farmers auto insurance may not offer the best premiums, but it does provide more discounts than many of the best car insurance companies.
Interestingly, Farmers stands out for providing more and better discounts for young adults than other insurers, despite the fact that its rates for this demographic are high. Its Youthful Driver discount, for example, is available to drivers under 25 who live with a parent or grandparent who has held a Farmers auto policy for at least a year. There's another unique discount called Shared family car, which applies to households with more active drivers, including one 20 years old or younger, than cars.

More Farmers insurance discounts
I haven't included every discount Farmers has in this table. For a complete list of discounts available with this insurer, visit the Farmers discount page.Signal®
Signal® from Farmers is a fairly standard car insurance telematics program that uses a mobile app to track your driving behavior. It looks at how safely you drive, and it awards the safest drivers with discounted premiums at renewal while slapping the riskiest drivers with higher prices. This potential risk isn't unusual for telematics programs (for instance, it's possible to have your rate increased if you demonstrate unsafe driving using Progressive Snapshot), but it's still worth noting.
Unlike other safe-driving programs, Signal also includes a bonus rewards program. Basically, if your safe-driving score is at least 80%, you'll be entered into a monthly drawing for up to $100 in gift cards.
Editor's note
Signal isn't available in Hawaii, New York, or South Carolina, and discounts from this program aren't offered in California.

Coverage
Farmers stands out from other car insurance companies for providing more coverage options and add-ons for both standard personal vehicles and recreational or specialty vehicles. If you're looking for a policy that will go above and beyond standard coverage, Farmers might be worth checking out.
A few unique types of policies include OEM parts coverage, rideshare and food delivery coverage, customized equipment coverage, and glass deductible buyback coverage (which covers windshield and glass repairs with a $0 or $100 deductible).
Here's the full list of coverage options with Farmers auto insurance:
- Liability insurance
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance
- Medical payments
- Personal injury protection (PIP)
- Collision insurance
- Comprehensive insurance
- Guaranteed Value
- GAP insurance
- Customized equipment insurance
- Glass deductible buyback
- Full windshield and glass coverage
- Spare parts coverage
- Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) coverage
- New car replacement coverage
- Towing and roadside service
- Rental car reimbursement
- Rideshare and food delivery insurance
- Loss of use insurance
- Personal umbrella insurance
- Motorcycle insurance
- Boat and watercraft insurance
- Collectible car insurance
- RV and motor home insurance
- ATV insurance
- 5th wheel and travel trailer insurance
Not many insurers provide all of the above specialty coverages, so Farmers might be a good one to check with if you've got a nontraditional vehicle to insure or want to pay for extra cushioning for your pockets.
Farmers vs. competitors
As I've mentioned, Farmers is not competitively priced when you're looking at average premiums. This is true when you're comparing the insurer's rates both to its competitors and to the national average rates for similar coverage.
In terms of the top 10 car insurance companies by popularity, Farmers has the second-highest average prices, outranking only Liberty Mutual. Its full coverage premiums are especially high relative to the national average and competitors, so you may be able to lower your car insurance by going with another company for fuller policies.
Company name | Average monthly full coverage | Average monthly liability-only coverage |
USAA | $99 | $46 |
GEICO | $118 | $55 |
State Farm | $119 | $55 |

Farmers vs. AAA
Like Farmers, AAA offers broad coverage with a range of unique policies. But unlike Farmers, AAA operates through an association of local clubs and partners with other insurance providers to underwrite policies. AAA car insurance is also only available in 14 states compared to Farmers' 42.
In addition to being fundamentally different in how they operate, Farmers and AAA differ in pricing. It's impossible to provide average premiums for AAA because rates can vary by individual club, so whether you receive better prices from Farmers or AAA may depend largely on where you live. AAA doesn't provide as many discounts as Farmers, though, and lags behind on claims satisfaction.
Farmers vs. Farm Bureau
Farmers and Farm Bureau may often be confused with each other, but the two companies aren't very much alike. For one, and most importantly, Farm Bureau generally offers lower average premiums — it beats the national average for liability coverage for all driver profiles, and I'd suggest it over Farmers if you've got a DUI or are a teen driver.
But Farm Bureau requires membership, like AAA, and this can be a frustrating barrier. It also partners with other insurers, so you'll need to connect with an agent to get more information about coverage available to you. But in general, Farm Bureau doesn't provide as many policy options, so I may not recommend it if you need specialty coverage or add-ons.
FAQs
How do I contact Farmers?
To get help from a Farmers representative over the phone, call 888-327-6335 between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. CT on Saturday and Sunday. This is the customer care center number, so it's the place to go for general support and questions. There are separate numbers for claims support, payments, and sales, and you can find those on the Farmers contact page.
You can also fill out an online form to receive a response via email, or you can live chat through your account or the company's Facebook page.
Is Farmers auto insurance good at paying claims?
Farmers auto insurance is one of the best companies at paying claims, according to a 2024 study from J.D. Power. It ranked 8th out of 21.
What company owns Farmers insurance?
Farmers Insurance is owned by Zurich Insurance Group, a global insurance company headquartered in Switzerland. Zurich offers a range of insurance products in more than 210 countries and territories and has around 56,000 employees. Zurich acquired Farmers Insurance in 1998.
Bottom line
Farmers Insurance is a great choice for those who want a car insurance company that offers a wide variety of coverage options and a customer-approved claims process. Unfortunately, you won't know how good a company's claim process is until you need it, but Farmers has a history of high customer satisfaction relative to other insurers.
However, Farmers auto insurance doesn't quite operate in every state, and its premiums are far from the best around. In fact, they're some of the highest I've seen, so it's going to be especially important that you compare quotes from this company with quotes from others to make sure you're getting the policy you need at premiums you can afford.
