Rite Aid continues to shutter stores as it struggles with the effects of filing for bankruptcy.
The pharmacy chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2023 and has been shutting down underperforming locations since then to help it through the process.
Most recently, 44 new stores have been on the chopping block. If you frequented one of these locations, you may need to find a new drugstore to save money on essentials.

Michigan isn’t the only state suffering heavy losses due to Rite Aid’s bankruptcy filings.
The company has shut down 21 more locations across Ohio, with almost 180 locations now closed for good in the state.
Ohio’s cuts were so severe that the company only had four stores open in the Buckeye State by the end of September. Residents in Ashland, Cambridge, Uhrichsville, and Wooster are still able to shop at their local Rite Aids.

The store’s home state saw cuts
Rite Aid didn’t spare its home state of Pennsylvania either.
The store, which is headquartered in Philadelphia, shut down almost 100 locations throughout the state as part of its elimination of poor-performing stores.
When did Rite Aid start closing stores?
Rite Aid began to shut down locations when it first announced it would be filing for bankruptcy in October 2023.
The company’s original announcement said it would initially close around 150 locations, with more than 40 stores closing in Rite Aid’s home state of Pennsylvania.
What happens to customer prescriptions?
It can be frustrating to be a Rite Aid customer and now have to worry about what could happen to your prescriptions at your local pharmacy.
According to Rite Aid, prescriptions can be transferred to a local Walgreens, so you can still have access to them.
Are there other alternatives?
The good news is you don’t have to transfer your prescription to Walgreens. Customers can also request that Rite Aid transfer it to a different pharmacy instead.
You may want to consider a local pharmacy, choose a chain pharmacy like CVS, or use your Costco or Sam’s Club membership.
Another option would be to take your prescriptions online to retailers like CostPlusDrugs, which may be able to save you money on prescriptions.
