Recently, there’s been some hoopla surrounding Chase’s new partnership with DoorDash. The idea of receiving additional food delivery perks as a cardmember can sound exciting, but what, exactly, do you get from these Chase DoorDash benefits?

We’ll take a look at what’s available, based on which Chase credit cards you have, so you can decide if these new benefits are a good fit for you — and, if so, how you can put them to use.

The Chase DashPass membership explained

DashPass is a subscription offered by the food delivery service DoorDash. With a DashPass membership, you pay $9.99 per month and avoid delivery fees on eligible orders with participating restaurants. In order to qualify, though, you need to spend more than $12 on your order and look on the app to make sure the restaurant is DashPass eligible (you’ll see a blue checkmark).

In addition to freeing you from delivery fees, DashPass could in some cases also get you reduced service fees on eligible orders. According to DoorDash, it’s not uncommon to save $4 or $5 on delivery and service fees combined on a single order. So, if you place three orders per month, there’s a good chance a DashPass subscription would pay for itself (assuming you make eligible purchases each time).

The Chase DoorDash benefits are all related to getting access to a DashPass membership. Depending on the card you have, you can get a free DashPass membership for at least 12 months, or receive a statement credit to be used for a DashPass membership.

Which cards get the Chase DoorDash benefits

Not every card is eligible for the Chase DoorDash benefits — and the benefits you receive depend on the card you have. So, if you're looking for one of the best rewards credit cards that offer Chase DoorDash, access this is what you need to know:

Chase Sapphire Reserve®

With the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, you get free DashPass benefits for at least 12 months after adding the card to your DoorDash account and making it your preferred way to pay. On top of that, you also get $5 per month DoorDash credit.

Overall, with 12 months of the $9.99 monthly fee waived and $60 worth of annual statement credits, these DoorDash benefits are worth at least $179.88.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

With the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, you essentially get a complementary DashPass membership for at least one year. Add the card to your DoorDash app and make it the preferred way to pay in order to automatically unlock this benefit. With a 12-month membership, this benefit is worth $119.88.

Chase Freedom Flex℠ and Chase Freedom Unlimited®

These credit cards receive access to the new Chase DoorDash benefits as well, but the promotion period is shorter. Here’s how it works:

  • You get free DoorDash DashPass benefits on eligible orders for three months after activation.
  • After the first three months, the user will be auto-enrolled for the next 9 months in DashPass with a 50% discount applied to the membership rate.
  • After the first 12 months, the user will be auto-enrolled into full-price membership.

At current DashPass membership rates, the value of this benefit is $74.93. But when your actual cost and savings will be determined by the rates at the time of your auto-enrollment.

Chase co-branded cards

Several eligible Chase co-branded cards qualify for this DoorDash subscription benefit. You can get a 12-month DashPass subscription for free on any of the following cards:

United Gateway℠ Card Southwest® Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card World of Hyatt Business Credit Card
United℠ Explorer Card Southwest® Rapid Rewards® Performance Business Credit Card Aeroplan® Credit Card
United Quest℠ Card Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card Aer Lingus Visa Signature® Card
United Club℠ Infinite Card Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card British Airways Visa Signature® Card
United℠ Business Card IHG One Rewards Traveler Credit Card Iberia Visa Signature® Card
Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card Disney® Visa® Card
Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card IHG One Rewards Premier Business Credit Card Disney® Premier Visa® Card
Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card The World of Hyatt Credit Card Starbucks® Rewards Visa® Card

After 12 months, you're automatically enrolled in the DoorPass subscription at full price, which is $9.99 per month. This benefit gives you a value of $119.88.

How to activate the DashPass benefit

It’s possible to activate this benefit by going to your DoorDash account and adding an eligible card. You can do this online, by going to the DoorDash website, or you can look for the offer in your mobile app.

In order to qualify, you must add the card to your account and make it your preferred method of payment. You’ll receive the benefits associated with the particular card you make your preferred method. For example, if you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve on the account and also a Chase Freedom Unlimited, whichever card you make your preferred method of payment will be the determinant of your benefits. So, if you want the Sapphire Reserve benefits, you need to make sure you designate your Reserve card as the preferred method of payment.

Also, realize that the card must be on the DoorDash account. When you use Apple Pay, Google Pay, or some other third-party payment, even if your Chase card is connected and used, it won’t register as an eligible purchase. You need to have your Chase card directly on the DoorDash account and marked as your preferred payment if you want your DoorDash benefits.

The Chase DoorDash statement credit explained

The statement credit that’s part of these new Chase DoorDash benefits is only available to Chase Sapphire Reserve holders (and J.P. Morgan Reserve cardholders).

When you order food delivered to your home from DoorDash, and you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, you get DashPass benefits that include no delivery fees and potentially reduced service fees — but you also get a statement credit for other costs.

You’ll still have to pay for your DoorDash food when you order it, but afterward you’ll be reimbursed for up to $60 annually. Statement credits will automatically post to your Chase account after each eligible purchase.

How to activate the DoorDash statement credit

This benefit kicks in starting from the date you add your Chase Sapphire Reserve card to your DoorDash account and activate the benefits. You’ll be taken step-by-step through the process if you do so through the website or on the mobile app. The sooner you activate, the longer you may have to take advantage of the first promotional year.

Again, make sure your Chase Sapphire Reserve card is marked as your preferred payment method. You’ll only receive your statement credits if the Chase Sapphire card is preferred and used to make your purchases. If you use Apple Pay or Google Pay, and those methods use your Chase card, you won’t be credited.

Bottom line

These Chase DoorDash benefits line up with the Amex UberEats benefits as seen in the Chase Sapphire Reserve vs. the The Platinum Card® from American Express comparison. (Terms Apply)

If you frequently use DoorDash or use DoorDash when you travel, these benefits might be a good fit for you. Personally, I order food delivery through an app at least four times per month. I live in an area where eligible DoorDash restaurants are limited, but I can see this benefit being useful when I travel to cities where there are more options. Just keep in mind that loyalty to DoorDash is required if you want to make the most of the benefit.

For those without a Chase Sapphire Reserve or Chase Sapphire Preferred card, though, the new DoorDash benefits might not have the same appeal. Additionally, unless the statement credit benefits are extended beyond the first two years, those with a Chase Sapphire Reserve might see diminishing returns.

Carefully consider your situation and review how often you get food delivery. These Chase DoorDash benefits can be a nice perk if you already have a Chase card. And, if you don’t have a Chase card, but use DoorDash frequently, now might be a good time to get a card and take advantage of these benefits.
