Family Dollar Is Closing 600 Stores in 2024 (Is Yours One of Them?)

Dollar stores have become popular as customers try to fight rising costs and save money on groceries, household items, and more.

But Family Dollar, which is owned by Dollar Tree, has been struggling with mounting competition and its own inflation issues. In March, Dollar Tree announced that it expected to close 1,000 Family Dollar stores, starting with 600 closing in 2024.

• 534 Lawrence St., Slocomb

A Family Dollar manager confirmed the store's closing on Lawrence Street to a local news station, but there is no specific date on when the store will close for good.

• 233 E. State St., Jacksonville
• 7001 Merrill Road, Jacksonville
• 556 Monument Road, Jacksonville
• 540 W. Brevard St., Tallahassee

Four other Tallahassee locations are expected to remain open for now, and discount store rival Dollar General still has a location a few blocks away from the closed Family Dollar.

• 820 NE Jefferson St., Peoria

Two of Peoria’s five Family Dollars will be shutting down and banners are already in place out in front of the Sterling Avenue location announcing the closing.

• 800 Kansas Ave., Kansas City
• 1999 N. 63rd Drive, Kansas City
• 826 N. Roosevelt St., Marion
• 309 E. 9th St., Peabody
• 322 E 13th St N., Wichita

The Marion location has only been open for one-and-a-half years but is now shutting its doors with most merchandise on sale for 50% to clear out inventory.

• 431 W. Oak St., Louisville
• 1250 Bardstown Road, Louisville

Louisville still has plenty of options for Family Dollar shoppers with 18 locations remaining open in the city.

• 507 N Sibley Ave., Litchfield

Family Dollar had been at the Litchfield locations for almost three decades. It opened in 1996 before shutting down as part of Family Dollar’s downsizing.

• 200 E. Tilden St., Humansville
• 503 E. Main St., Willow Springs

Family Dollar will remain open in other locations throughout Missouri, including stores in St. Louis and Kansas City.

• 1820 10th St., Gering

The Gering location announced its closing with a large “Store Closing” banner out front with sales of 50% off items inside.

• Chambers St., Trenton
• E. State St., Trenton

Like other locations, the Middletown store had “Store Closing” banners, making it clear that the store was part of the shutdown of Family Dollar spots.

• 1313 Greenfield St., Wilmington

New Hanover County, home to Wilmington, has 29 dollar stores, according to one expert. The city will still have four Family Dollar stores after these two closures.

Columbus and Cincinnati took big hits to their Family Dollar options, with four locations shutting down as part of the closures. Discount shoppers will also be struggling in West Dayton with the closures of both Family Dollar and Walgreens.

Philadelphia lost six of its Family Dollar locations during the shutdowns. Notices with the state’s Department of Labor and Industry noted the closures would take effect on April 20.

• 4403 Jefferson Davis Highway, Clearwater

Store shelves at the Clearwater location were cleared out while customers stood in long lines to get last-minute bargains before the store shut down, according to one local news station.

• 304 State Highway 185 N., Seadrift

The Seadrift location closed at the end of April and was the only location in the town on the Gulf Coast of Texas.

• 3516 Campbell Ave., Lynchburg
• 408 Federal St., Lynchburg

Lynchburg lost half of its Family Dollar locations with customers now limited to stores on Timberland Road and Fort Avenue.

• 388 Beverly Pike, Elkins

The liquidation sale at the Family Dollar store in Elkins was so popular that police were called to help with the flow of traffic into the store’s parking lot.

• 320 Lincoln Ave., Fennimore

The Family Dollar in Fennimore closed in March, but the building’s owners told a local news station that he was aware of the closing as far back as November when Family Dollar decided not to renew the store’s lease.

Family Dollar is a great way to save money on essentials, but there are other ways to save if you’re on a tight budget.

It’s a good idea to revisit your budget regularly to find new ways to save money and consider putting that cash somewhere else like an emergency fund or high-yield savings account or pay off debt.
