Let's face it, mobile check deposit has made our lives so much easier. Instead of having to find time to make a trip to the bank, you can just take a quick picture of a check, and voila! The funds are in your account without you ever having to leave your home or office.

However, when it comes to mobile check deposits, not all banks are the same. When selecting the best online bank for mobile check deposits, factors such as deposit amount limits and the time it takes to access deposited funds are important considerations. Before you make a decision, it's also wise to take into account perks such as minimal fees, competitive APYs, and other rewards that banks offer.

What to look for with online banks that offer mobile check deposit

In your search for the best online bank for mobile check deposits, there are several factors you should pay particular attention to, including:

  • Deposit limits: Most banks have daily and monthly limits on how much you can mobile deposit. Ensure that these limits align with your specific needs.
  • Fund availability: Banks differ on how quickly you can access funds deposited via your mobile phone. While some banks release funds within 1 business day, others may take up to 5 days.
  • App experience: A user-friendly app makes mobile deposits easy and less frustrating.
  • Additional features: Mobile check deposit features are only part of the picture. You should also consider fees, ATM access, available APYs, and customer ratings when choosing the best checking account and best savings account for you.

  • High-yield checking and savings accounts
  • No monthly, overdraft5, or minimum balance fees6
  • Your account must have at least $500 to use mobile check deposit

SoFi has one of the easiest bank accounts to open online and offers many benefits that make it an attractive option for banking. With SoFi Checking and Savings, both accounts earn interest. Its checking account earns 0.50% APY, and the savings account earns up to 3.80% APY when you have at least $1,000 in monthly direct deposits.7

While SoFi has no minimum balance requirements, you will need to have at least $500 in your account to use its mobile check deposit feature. Once you have that, mobile deposits can be done easily with the SoFi mobile app. A portion of the deposited funds will be available the next day, and the rest will be available within 3 days for deposits up to $5,000, and within 5 days for deposits over $5,000. There are limits to how much you can mobile deposit, but that limit may be different for each user. I have SoFi, and my daily mobile deposit limit is $200,000.

One drawback I found with SoFi's mobile deposit is that I can't deposit funds directly into a savings vault. With SoFi's savings account, you can have up to 20 "vaults" for different savings goals. However, you must first deposit funds into your primary savings account and then transfer them to a vault.

FAQs

What banks deposit mobile checks instantly?

While you can mobile deposit checks instantly with most banks, the amount of time it takes for those funds to be available differs. Some financial institutions, like Ally, Discover, and Alliant Credit Union, will give you access to a portion of your deposit within a day. The standard timeframe for accessing mobile deposited funds is 2 to 5 business days.

What is the largest check a bank will deposit?

Most banks have daily and monthly limits on how much you can deposit via a mobile app. Sometimes, these limits are unique to the customer. Of the financial institutions we reviewed, Alliant Credit Union appears to have one of the highest daily deposit limits of $100,000 and a monthly limit of $250,000.

Can a check bounce after it clears?

Yes, it is possible for a check to "bounce" after clearing a mobile deposit. That's why many banks recommend that you save mobile-deposited checks for up to 30 days. If an issue does arise, you still have the physical check for reference.

Bottom line

Mobile check deposit is one of the most convenient tools offered by online banks, but the best online bank for mobile check deposits depends on more than just the ease of scanning a check with your phone. Deposit limits, fund availability, and perks such as competitive APYs or cashback rewards are other important factors to consider when looking for an option that suits your needs. Before opening an account, take time to compare these features so you can choose the best option for you.

Methodology

To identify the best online banks for mobile check deposit, we looked at deposit limits and fund availability, as well as factors like account fees, overdraft policies, APYs, ATM access, being a bank with no credit check, and more. While not every financial institution offering mobile check deposit was reviewed, those highlighted represent a mix of ones that offer the best benefits for their customers.
