Who should get the Lowe’s Business Rewards Card from American Express?

The Amex Lowe’s Business Rewards Card is for businesses that want to capitalize on company spending in specific categories, like Lowe’s purchases or office supplies. That makes this a good credit card for home renovation projects and also a good credit card for contractors.

The Lowe's Business Rewards Card from American Express comes with an automatic 5% discount on Lowe’s purchases. This discount can add up if your business spends considerable money at the store. Keep in mind that there is a list of items excluded from the discount, and the discount can’t be combined with other promotions or discounts. So before you make your purchases make sure you read the fine print and shop smart.

This card is the best fit for a small business owner who is OK with redeeming the Lowe's Business Rewards points they earn for gift cards. In fact, gift cards are your only redemption choice with this card, with no options for statement credits or applying points toward travel purchases.

There’s no specific credit score requirement for the Lowe’s Business Rewards Card, but personal and business credit history will be deciding factors for card approval and the amount of your credit line.

Lowe’s Business Rewards Card benefits and perks

  • Welcome bonus: New cardmembers can earn $100 cash back (in the form of a statement credit) upon card approval, in the form of a statement credit, with no minimum spending threshold required.
  • $0 annual fee: There’s no need to cut into your company’s profits with credit card fees. This Lowe’s credit card has a $0 annual fee.
  • Discounts at Lowe’s: Enjoy 5% savings on eligible Lowe’s purchases made with your Lowe’s card. Purchases made in-store or online at Lowes.com and LowesForPros.com are included.
  • Introductory APR: This card comes with an introductory 0% APR on purchases for the first 6 months after account opening, which gives your business a chance to use this credit card for large purchases and then pay those business expenses off over time without incurring credit card interest costs.
  • Account management tools: You can track your business purchases and more with the business management tools Lowe’s gives you access to with this credit card. Cardholders can view statements and even break purchases down by each employee card. You’ll also have PO/job name tracking and access to 24/7 customer service.

Drawbacks to this card

  • No balance transfer offer: Although there’s an introductory APR offer on purchases, there is not a similar option for balance transfers at this time. That makes this card a good fit for new purchases, but not for refinancing credit card debt.
  • Foreign transaction fees: American Express is widely accepted worldwide, but using this particular card outside the U.S. means you will pay a foreign transaction fee of 2.7%. If you travel internationally, you’ll want to have another credit card with no foreign transaction fee.
  • Limited redemptions: Lowe’s Gift Cards and American Express Gift Cards are the only redemption options available for businesses using this Lowe’s credit card.

Earning and redeeming Lowe’s Business Rewards

Potential earnings in years one and two

Here's a look at how your points can add up with the Lowe's Business Rewards Card from American Express. To calculate these values, we used a point valuation of 1 cent per point, which is the highest value you can get with the gift card redemption options available.

Remember, this is an estimation. The actual value will be determined by how much you spend and in which categories you spend.

Year one earnings: $507

Year two earnings: $407

These values are based on the FinanceBuzz Credit Card Rewards Valuation Model, which looks at points earned via spending, the welcome bonus, and the annual fee.

Best ways to earn

Cardholders have three ways to earn the highest earning rate of 3X bonus points with the Lowe’s card. You can make purchases at U.S. restaurants, U.S. office supply stores, and U.S. wireless telephone service providers.

As a Lowe’s business credit card, it makes sense that businesses earn bonus rewards at the home improvement superstore too. All purchases at Lowe's stores and Lowes.com earn 2X points per dollar spent. All other purchases earn 1X point per dollar spent.

Categories Rewards rate
U.S. restaurants, U.S. office supply stores, and U.S. wireless telephone service providers 3X
Lowe's stores and Lowes.com 2X
All other purchases 1X

Maximizing your redemptions

The Lowe’s Business Rewards Card doesn’t offer a lot of variety or flexibility in terms of redemption options. Currently the only redemption choice for businesses is gift cards. You do have the choice between a few gift card options though:

  • Lowe’s gift cards
  • American Express gift cards
  • Gas reward cards
  • Outdoor reward cards

The gas rewards card is good at any U.S. gas station that accepts American Express. The outdoor rewards card is accepted at all L.L.Bean, Cabela's, Austad's Golf, and Bass Pro Shops. Redemptions can be requested starting at 2,500 points, and gift cards are available in denominations of $25, $50, and $100.

Lowe’s Business Rewards points are worth 1 cent when redeemed for all the gift card options except American Express gift cards, which are worth about .007 or less than 1 cent each. Unfortunately, American Express gift cards offer the most flexibility because you can use them anywhere that accepts American Express. So this card will be a best fit for you and your business if you plan to redeem your points for the Lowe’s, gas reward, or outdoor reward cards.
