Who should get the TD Cash Credit Card card?
If you want the option to choose between different Spend Categories each quarter with elevated rates of cash back, consider the TD Cash Credit Card.
With the TD Cash Credit Card, you can earn 3% Cash Back on your choice of spend category; 2% Cash Back in your second choice of spend category; and 1% on all other eligible purchases. Available Spend Categories include dining, entertainment, gas, grocery, and travel.
Having the option to choose different Spend Categories could help you maximize your earning potential if you frequently spend higher amounts in different categories. For example, you might spend a lot on gas one quarter but more on dining the next.
If your top spending categories don't change much, you might consider a different cash back card with a higher rewards rate that aligns with your everyday purchases. In addition, if you'd prefer a rewards card that earns the same rate on all eligible spending, regardless of category, the TD Cash Credit Card isn't the card for you.
TD Cash card benefits and perks
- Customizable cash back: Earn 3% Cash Back on your choice of spend category; 2% Cash Back in your second choice of spend category; and 1% on all other eligible purchases.
- Unlimited cash back: The cash back you earn from making eligible purchases is unlimited, including on purchases in your chosen Spend Categories. This is useful because other cards with customizable categories typically set a limit on how much you can earn at elevated rates.
- $0 annual fee: There's no need to worry about an additional cost each year with a $0 annual fee.
- Intro APR offers on balance transfers and purchases: Receive 0% intro APR for 15 billing cycles on balance transfers and purchases (then 19.24%, 24.24% or 29.24% (variable)).
- Visa Platinum and Signature benefits: Because this TD credit card offers both Visa Signature and Visa Platinum benefits, you could potentially receive travel and purchase protections, car rental benefits, cell phone protection, identify theft protection, Visa concierge services, and more. Whether your TD Cash card qualifies as a Visa Platinum or Visa Signature depends on your credit limit.
What we don't like about this card: drawbacks
- Foreign transaction fees: You have to pay 3% foreign transaction fees on applicable purchases. To avoid these fees and earn travel rewards, check out the best travel credit cards.
- Limited availability: TD Bank credit cards are only available to residents in Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia, and Vermont.
Earning and redeeming TD Cash Credit Card rewards
Potential earnings in years one and two
Here's a look at how your rewards can add up with the TD Cash Credit Card. To calculate these values, we used a point valuation of one cent ($0.01) per point.
Remember, this is an estimation. The actual value will be determined by how much you spend and in which categories you spend.
Year one earnings: $885
Year two earnings: $685
These values are based on the FinanceBuzz Credit Card Rewards Valuation Model which takes a look at points earned via spending, the welcome bonus for new cardholders, and the annual fee.
Best ways to earn
Category | Rewards rate |
Your choice of spend category | 3% |
Your second choice of spend category | 2% |
All other eligible purchases | 1% |
The best way to earn cash back with the TD Cash Credit Card rewards program is by using the card as much as possible on purchases you already plan on making that align with the card's Spend Categories. Note that this could take a bit of extra effort on your part since you have to choose your Spend Categories each quarter.
For example, you might want to switch to gas as a Spend Category if you know you have a big road trip coming up. Or travel could be a good choice if you're about to purchase flights and hotel stays for a vacation.
Available Spend Categories include:
- Dining
- Entertainment
- Gas
- Grocery
- Travel
The default Spend Categories are dining and grocery stores (in that order) if you don't choose anything.
Maximizing your redemptions
The TD Cash Credit Card earns cashback rewards in the form of points. You can redeem your points for:
- Statement credits or direct deposits into U.S. checking or savings accounts (minimum 2,500-point redemption)
- Gift cards
- Merchandise
- Travel
Your points are worth at least one cent ($0.01) per point if redeemed for cash back (statement credits or direct deposits), gift cards, and travel. So 20,000 points could be worth $200 toward an eligible direct deposit.
Redeeming your points for merchandise could have a different redemption value, so it likely makes sense to stick to the other redemption options. Of course, this depends on your personal finance goals.
But keep in mind that redeeming your points for direct deposits essentially lets you use your rewards for whatever you want since it turns them into cash.
Other cards to consider
The TD Cash Credit Card provides useful ways to customize how you earn cashback rewards, but you can find other cards with customizable earning rates if you compare credit cards. For example, we recommend the Citi Custom Cash® Card and Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card as worthy alternatives to consider.
Citi Custom Cash® Card
The Citi Custom Cash has a spending cap on its top bonus category, but the rate is higher compared to the TD Cash Credit Card. You also have more categories to choose from, including select streaming services, drugstores, home improvement stores, and fitness clubs.
It earns 5% cash back in your top eligible spending category each billing cycle (up to the first $500 spent, then 1% cash back), plus unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases; plus, as a special travel offer, earn an additional 4% cash back on hotels, car rentals, and attractions booked on Citi Travel℠ portal through 6/30/2026.
Like the TD Cash card, this card has a $0 annual fee. To potentially earn more cash back on your spending, especially if you don't spend more than $500 in your top spending category each month, choose Citi over TD.

Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card
The Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards earns 6% cash back for the first year in the category of your choice, 2% at grocery stores and wholesale clubs, and unlimited 1% on all other purchases. After the first year from account opening, you'll earn 3% cash back on purchases in your choice category. Earn 6% and 2% cash back on the first $2,500 in combined purchases each quarter in the choice category, and at grocery stores and wholesale clubs, then earn unlimited 1% thereafter. After the 3% first-year bonus offer ends, you will earn 3% and 2% cash back on these purchases up to the quarterly maximum.
This card has a spending cap on its top bonus categories, unlike the TD Cash Credit Card. But Bank of America Preferred Rewards® members could boost their cashback rewards by up to 75%. This is a unique benefit you won't find anywhere else, including on the TD Cash Credit Card. If this card's bonus categories don't feel too confusing to you, you could potentially earn more with this card than by going with the TD Bank credit card.
