In April, 99 Cents Only announced it was winding down operations and liquidating its merchandise.

When did 99 Cents Only file for bankruptcy?

In April, 99 Cents Only filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and began liquidating its merchandise and closing stores.

According to documents filed in court, the retailer closed more than 100 locations by April 30, with the rest shutting down in May as part of the liquidation process.

How many stores were slated to close?

At the time, 99 Cents Only planned to shut down more than 370 locations. The move affected around 14,000 employees across stores in California, Texas, Nevada, and Arizona.

In a bit of good news, some stores ended up surviving after the bankruptcy announcement.

Dollar Tree took on 170 locations that will now remain open, giving some locations a new lease on life. Customers will continue to have a great option to save money on a variety of items at a low price.

Dollar Tree steps up to take over stores

Dollar Tree plans to reopen the 99 Cents Only stores in the fall of 2024.

Dollar Tree picked up the new locations to help it expand its reach. As it turns out, 99 Cents Only stores are around 20,000 square feet, which is more than double the typical size for a Dollar Tree.
