It's vital to know the best ways to save more on everyday essentials at your favorite stores and retailers. And for shoppers on a budget, it's important to be informed of potential store closures in order to shop smarter.
From bankruptcies to declining sales, the retail landscape has been dismal. Here are 9 retail chains that have been projected to close locations in 2025.
Get a protection plan on all your appliances
Did you know if your air conditioner stops working, your homeowner’s insurance won’t cover it? Same with plumbing, electrical issues, appliances, and more.
Whether or not you’re a new homeowner, a home warranty from Choice Home Warranty could pick up the slack where insurance falls short and protect you against surprise expenses. If a covered system in your home breaks, you can call their hotline 24/7 to get it repaired.
For a limited time, you can get your first month free with a Single Payment home warranty plan.
Foot Locker
By 2026, around 400 total Foot Locker and Champs Sports locations will have faced closures.
Moving forward, the company plans to pivot to a younger demographic via greater square-footage and unique store experiences.
Big Lots
Even retailers known for their expansive inventory aren't immune to retail challenges.
601 locations were reported for potential closure in 2025, according to Coresight.
Although, with Big Lots under new ownership, some locations may be saved.
The retailer will determine which stores won't be shuttered by April 7, 2025.
CVS
In 2021, drugstore retailer CVS introduced a plan to close up to 900 locations over the next few years.
By March 2025, four locations in Connecticut and Michigan will be included in the closures as well in order to improve foot traffic or decrease redundant customer footprints.
Best Buy
Best Buy aims to close up to 15 stores in 2025.
Best Buy's store closures in years prior were due to a focus on the digital market. Stores were remodeled with a smaller sales floor, while the rest of the space was used to fulfill online orders.
Starbucks
10 Starbucks locations were reportedly closed by January 2025, according to Starbucks Everywhere and Usearch.
Additionally, a San Francisco location is projected to close on February 9, 2025.
Introducing new Starbuck locations will also be halted as well.
Walgreens Boots Alliance
Walgreens Boots Alliance announced 333 store closures for 2025, according to Coresight.
"In fiscal 2025, we are focusing on stabilizing the retail pharmacy by optimizing our footprint, controlling operating costs, improving cash flow, and continuing to address reimbursement models to support dispensing margins and preserve patient access for the future," said Walgreens Boots Alliance CEO Tim Wentworth.
Macy's
Macy's announced plans to close 66 "non-go-forward" and "underproductive" locations in 2025.
"Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy's stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service," said Macy's, Inc. chairman and CEO Tony Spring.
Kohl's
27 Kohl's locations will halt sales for good in April 2025.
In addition ongoing store closures, the discount retailer reduced its corporate team by 10%.
7-Eleven
Inflation coupled with decreased sales in nicotine products resulted in a challenging 2024 for the convenience store.
148 closures are planned for 2025, and moving forward 7-Eleven plans to prioritize foodstuffs to reflect customer demand.
