Drawbacks of this card

  • Has annual fee: The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Amex Card has a relatively high annual fee of $650. This could make it cost-prohibitive for cardholders who aren't able to take full advantage of card benefits.
  • Low point value: In general, Marriott points are valued at around 1 cent apiece. While this card does offer a generous earnings rate, you might be able to get a higher point value with another card. For instance, with a travel card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, your points are worth 1.5 cents apiece when you use them to book trips through the Chase Travel℠ portal.

Earning & redeeming Marriott Bonvoy points

Potential earnings in year one

Here's a look at how your points can add up with the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card. To calculate these values, we used a point valuation of 1 cent.

Remember, this is an estimation. The actual value will be determined by how much you spend and in which categories you spend.

Year one earnings: $1,765

Year two earnings: $609

These values are based on the FinanceBuzz Credit Card Rewards Valuation Model, which takes a look at points earned via spending, the welcome bonus, and the annual fee.

Note that the values above only account for general travel spending, not the 6X bonus points you'll earn at hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program. They also don't account for the value of the statement credits or free night award. If you factor these in, you could get hundreds of dollars more in value from this card.

Best ways to earn

Thanks to the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant’s generous rewards structure, there are a few ways to rack up major points with this card. First, you can earn the welcome offer. Earn 185,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points after spending $6,000 in purchases in the first 6 months.

This welcome offer alone could go a long way toward a free hotel stay.

Beyond that, the best way to maximize your points is to book hotel stays at Marriott properties with your Bonvoy Brilliant card. This card offers a whopping 6X points on hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program. If you dine out or book flights frequently, you can also earn 3X points by using your Bonvoy Brilliant card. All other eligible purchases will net you 2X points.

Categories Rewards rate
Hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program 6X
Worldwide restaurants, flights booked directly with airlines 3X
All other eligible purchases 2X

Maximizing your redemptions

Earning Marriott Bonvoy points is half the battle, but the other half is using them well. It can be tempting to assume that a free hotel room is a great redemption, but there is a bit more to the formula.

Just like the dollars in your wallet, your Marriott Bonvoy points also have a set value. While Marriott doesn’t reveal the “true” value of their points, many credit card rewards experts estimate that Marriott Bonvoy are valued at 1 cent per point. With that in mind, you should aim to get that value when using your points for hotel stays.

To calculate a hotel room’s value, simply use this formula: (Cash price of a hotel room with taxes and fees divided by the number of points needed). If the number you end up with is near or above 1 cent per point, it could be a great opportunity to use your points. If it is significantly lower than 1 cent per point, you may be better off saving your points for another time.

In fact, you may want to consider hotel booking sites such as Expedia or Hotels.com to see if their rates are significantly lower. Remember that paying cash isn’t always the worst-case scenario if you want to maximize your points.

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card transfer partners

The Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program has 40 airline partners, giving you some flexibility with how you redeem your rewards. But there's one important thing to be aware of: Bonvoy points typically transfer at a 3:1 ratio to airline partners. This isn't necessarily the most valuable redemption option, so that's something to think about as you're planning future trips.
